Only thing YouTube could do is pull a Twitter and require an account for viewing videos, but I'd imagine the revenue from users without accounts would be too much of a lost
That's not the only thing, they could also discontinue the free tier and paywall YT.

Since a day, search results on m.youtube.com don't show channelName, views, uploaded for me. I have to refresh to page to get those. That probably is the start of something like that.

yea reverse engineering the API the app uses would be possible tho. YouTube paywalling their whole service would probably be less profitable for them

@wardpearce:matrix.orgWardalso not supporting desktop browsers would be insane, as I'd imagine that makes up a good chunk of ad revenue for them04:14:16

Or at the very least they could start implementing WideVine DRM on their streams.
06:04:22
@dfx4509b:matrix.org@dfx4509b:matrix.orgThat would effectively lock YT into the Google client exclusively, and also kill downloaders like yt-dlp.06:04:50

Not sure how that would work legally considering that most of the content on YouTube that doesn't have DRM is user-generated and YouTube doesn't license the content from the uploaders, so them adding DRM to user-generated content would potentially get them in legal trouble.

You can't compare YouTube and Netflix.
