#Niger - Amaq Agency: More than 114 soldiers of the Niger Army were killed last Thursday in two attacks by Islamic State fighters in the west of the country, one of which targeted an army base in the town of "Shinagoder", and the other a force of "border guards" near the town itself.

Military sources told "Amaq" that on Thursday (January 9), Islamic State fighters attacked a Niger army base in the town of "Chenagoder" near the border with Mali, and they clashed with soldiers inside it for several hours, killing and wounding dozens of them, before they took control of it, and the Soldiers who remained alive escaped towards the desert, where Islamic State fighters pursued them, killing several others there.

The sources added that combat aircraft belonging to the French and American armies tried to intervene to support the Niger army, and repel the attack of the Islamic State fighters, and did not achieve its goal due to the army's withdrawal from the town.
The same sources indicated that the outcome of the attack amounted to more than 100 soldiers of the Niger army, in addition to dozens of wounded, and large material losses of weapons, equipment and vehicles destroyed and seized by Islamic State fighters.
On the same day, Islamic State fighters attacked a force from the "border guards" of the Niger Army in the "Sanam" area east of the town of "Shinagoder", and were able to kill 14 soldiers and seize various weapons and ammunition.
Senior Niger army officials were dismissed from their positions on the background of the deadly attacks, including the army commander, the commander of the land forces, the inspector general, and others.
These attacks come at a time when France is holding meetings with countries in the "Sahel and Sahara" region to discuss ways to counter the escalating attacks by Islamic State fighters in the region.
