karmacolorcat | Metroid is well capable of extremely fun third person 3D as it is for first person 3D | 23:21:54 |
genghiskombat | Also, yeah, hearing Reggie as hyped for OM pre-release as we were made the end result that much more painful. | 23:21:55 |
genghiskombat | I can only imagine how disappointed he must have been. | 23:22:07 |
karmacolorcat | I really hope Other M's gameplay gets a second chance | 23:22:34 |
genghiskombat | And yeah, if they ever try that gameplay style again, I really hope it doesn't become dead-on-arrival just because of OM bias. | 23:22:40 |
karmacolorcat | whether as a Nintendo project, or the same treatment of P06 | 23:22:51 |
karmacolorcat | Now the story... | 23:23:17 |
karmacolorcat | I swear I dont remember it being that bad...?????? | 23:23:29 |
genghiskombat | Cuz here's the thing: I also believe that method of gameplay design for a Metroid game (at least insofar as the 3D action-platformer thing) can work. The sins of OM were all in the details...and the writing. | 23:23:45 |
karmacolorcat | but I think my memory wont age well once I review it | 23:23:52 |
karmacolorcat | crude question but, how would you kill Adam off instead? | 23:24:25 |
karmacolorcat | because he has to die, somehow | 23:24:32 |
karmacolorcat | that's something that's been bugging me about the mental rewriting | 23:24:52 |
genghiskombat | Well, the base concept they had going was workable, but it did need a few more details ironed out...and at least one major "what were they thinking?!" part altered significantly. | 23:25:10 |
karmacolorcat | so essentially rewrite the whole thing from scratch? | 23:25:51 |
karmacolorcat | dammit | 23:25:55 |
genghiskombat | No no, lemme finish... | 23:26:04 |
genghiskombat | Let's get the elephant in that room out of the way first: shooting Samus in the back? Gone. Reduced to atoms. Instead, have that small Metroid Samus found serve as proof of how much more dangerous the Sector Zero breed is, by escaping her sensors entirely (and if you've ever played a Prime game, you know Samus's radar ain't nothing to mess with), ambushing her, and sucking all the energy out of her suit in record time, all while being completely unshakable with Bombs. This gives the player a fright that may bring back memories of getting ambushed by Squishy the Big Boi in Super Metroid, except this Metroid clearly isn't going to stop at 1 Energy.
We can then have Adam come in with enough firepower to chase the thing off, but not kill it outright, at which point we can get the "you're not dealing with the average Metroids anymore" explanation, and make it more readily believable that walking into Sector Zero while it's rife with those things is a death sentence...which makes Adam stating his intention to do just that hit like a truck, all without him practically having to say out loud "yeah, I'm gonna effing die here." Samus's appropriately emotional reaction to this is mostly fine on its own, but I'd cut out the "suit glitch" stuff because it frankly looks tacky and dumb, and with the previous details established, whether her suit is on or not doesn't really affect the end outcome because what is she gonna do, go in there and die with him against odds we know even she can't handle?
As for the logical hole of "why can't he just shoot himself out an airlock and get picked up in Samus's ship before Sector Zero goes boom"...this is probably going to sound silly at first, but I think we can solve that one by simply not having any airlocks in Sector Zero to shoot open to begin with. It's a black site; it's not gonna let anything out once you hit that self-destruct button. | 23:33:59 |
genghiskombat | In essence, my thoughts on the matter are "the scene works fine if you just eliminate the elephant in the room." | 23:34:47 |
genghiskombat | I just presented an alternative that allows more room to teach the player what they need to know for it to make sense in a more...organic way than just "grab some popcorn, it's cutscene time." | 23:35:27 |
genghiskombat | Could even give the player a bit of "controlled helplessness" if you want, by having Samus's suit's cooldown or what have you finish right after the doors seal, causing players to try to find any way to open it, but then realize that all they can do is watch the big box of a black site float off into space and explode. | 23:36:29 |
genghiskombat | ...Or hit the "close blast doors" button if they can't bear to watch. | 23:36:59 |
karmacolorcat | that sounds quite doable | 23:41:27 |
karmacolorcat | I like it | 23:41:34 |
karmacolorcat | I have to rewatch Other M's story to see if it really fits that well, but I so far I take it | 23:46:27 |
karmacolorcat | Now I realize I dont remember much of it | 23:46:38 |
genghiskombat | Tbf, it's not entirely my idea. I kinda based it off how the Maxximum Edition mod redid that particular cutscene. | 23:47:33 |
karmacolorcat | the what | 23:47:43 |
genghiskombat | A mod made by a fan that, among other things, uses video editing software to "fix" the story as much as possible without having to create entirely new FMVs from the ground up. | 23:48:49 |
karmacolorcat | damn, that's interesting 🤔 | 23:49:16 |
