vmiguel | Yeah itβs an auction it probably would go higher π , auctions are going crazy these days, sure the cnc can be used for light milling jobs on soft metals, with stainless I am no so sure, I just think a capable lathe and milling machine are basic fabrication tools and the FabLab should consider to have them in the long term | 08:13:47 |

Kees van O | It is more a matter of the right cutting tools. I've done Stainless on small machines. You have to consider the forces on the machine and take light cuts and take the time. I expect it can be done on the portal as well. I agree that lath and mill would be fine. Point is that both require more than average craftsmanship. You don't have to be a machinist but there is a need for the 'right' attitude. Machines and tools are expensive as well as vulnerable and machining requires an attitude of thinking about how to get a job done with the tools at hand. π€ To be fair I would love it, but I doubt it has a place in Fablab Amersfoort. At least it is a challenge from multiple perspectives. And if so, it is more in the context of oud Micro Fabriek / Fablab Next Level. But the lack of interest to get that in place adds to my doubt. I have time and can do the things I like so I don't bother too much π Further more , situation dependent, you can 3D Print Stainless Steel Objects. However, I still lack an inert sintering kiln to start experimenting with it. | 09:52:13 |
vmiguel | there is an oven there that can be used for sintering with some adjustments by the way | 11:30:22 |
vmiguel | But regarding the machining shop is all a matter of proper training and some accountability, it is the same as the biolab, in the end they rely on specific knowledge and responsibility which the people that want to use them should know what they are doing | 11:33:52 |
Kees van O | More important the 'mission' of Fablab is to let people learn how to accomplish their requirements, to solve problems and to discover the way to get things done. I remember that 'some' time I struggled to make my own PCB's. Drawing the mask with inkt, and etching the copper away. An awful process ... There are alike routes for other (printing, milling, ...) as well. Quite often prototype your model by a 3D print using environment friendly filament before ordering the real thing. I follow this process before making the real thing. Often the 3D Printed version works out to be good enough and fulfil its purpose. Even better replacement is cheap and fast .... It is not the tooling but the learning curve: diagnose, analyse and solve the requirement. Collaboration and knowledge sharing helps us all! | 11:37:09 |
vmiguel | yes I understand, I am just coming here with eyes on the things we would like to do on a semiconductor lab, there the 3d print will not cut, when handling high vac and processing gases, sure you can order those parts but then we are talking big money | 11:39:59 |
Kees van O | I will check for that furnace. But the question is the 'leakage' it is not just ventilating air but creating an adequate flow of (expensive) inert gas. | 11:42:31 |
vmiguel | In reply to @kvoeveren:matrix.orgyes, i think covering the heaters with a stainless steel box you can create a sealed environment with minimum leakage | 11:44:06 |
Kees van O | high vac and processing gases ... I think that brass and plastic is more than adequate in most cases. I'm quite aware that things should not go out of hand by costs π€ | 11:45:45 |
vmiguel | In reply to @kvoeveren:matrix.orgsorry but you are quite wrong on that, only alu and stainless can be used on those situations, ptfe if the temperatures allow is possible too, brass is one of the materials you want to avoid on high vac systems | 11:47:45 |
Kees van O | To get a stainles steel case you need some expensive steel plate and you have to weld it (needs inert gas from two sides). An air tight door ??? | 11:47:47 |
vmiguel | In reply to @kvoeveren:matrix.orgyes sure, but is cheaper than building a hole furnace | 11:48:21 |
Kees van O | AL is easy to process; PTFE flows by nature ... | 11:48:57 |
Kees van O | But when you are in we can make an appointment and see what you need and whether it can be solved. I don't know everything and like to learn but I don't see why brass should not be fit for purpose. Even the adapters for Oxygen (I think 300 bar ...) are made from brass. | 11:53:15 |
vmiguel | brass can't be used, it has zinc | 12:00:02 |
vmiguel | zinc poisons high vac systems | 12:00:24 |
Kees van O | Ah thank you, know your materials π€¨ | 12:18:58 |

Kees van O | For the robotics fan, just found out Xiaomi made a motion actuator, https://www.mi.com/cyber-gear | 11:20:52 |
