jnils18 | Hey, I'm looking at acquiring an existing WISP in the state I live in... I was just curious to ask those more well-versed in this area whether there are any possible threats to fixed wireless Internet service to be aware of as I consider buying this business? Things like improvements to satellite internet or with 5G where wireless carriers are offering home internet packaged with cell service... I know that already exists today. But just trying to understand what the future of wireless Internet looks like and whether I'd be investing in a technology that has continued upside and value or if new technologies are coming that could make fixed wireless less desirable of an option | 17:39:19 |
jnils18 | I know some of it depends on location and competitive landscape.. but my question is more forward-looking to know if there's any technologies on the horizon that could threaten the viability of WISPs in general | 17:44:32 |
Graham | Satellite and 5G are competitive in some areas. There's a large federal funding round going on right now that could fund fiber builds in some pretty rural areas. If you're open to share what type of equipment the WISP is using and more about where it's at we might be able to help more. | 17:47:16 |
Graham | If you get it closed quickly you may be able to participate in the funding opportunity. | 17:47:32 |
micknowsbest | I created this group a while.Back glad things are evolving... Yeah there's a lot of funding going around which why I started this chat ..yeah wireless radios are expensive to maintain and fiber is More resilient And fast...unless you have clear line of site doesn't make much sence unless you got people in all 4 directions and intend on making a cell tower .... But with numbers it's easier to colobrate and not worry about easements | 19:23:41 |
Graham | @micknowsbest:matrix.org: agree in general but this is my group based on my website startyourownisp.com | 19:31:57 |

micknowsbest | CA passed a anti compete ruling which makes it easier to start a ISP , and is why " I " started this group lmao | 21:15:16 |
