I know dozens of programming languages and I'm not getting the response I usually see for any language. I think a lot of it has to do with inflation causing companies to tighten their belts and the number of developers that are currently on the job market makes it far less likely you get any response at all from most companies. | 13:44:04 |

More precisely, it's that interest rates rose in the U.S. starting a year ago. The cost of capital is now much higher. Money that would be plowed into companies—like during the past 14 years, when the Fed made capital cheap—is now going into U.S. Treasury instruments. Companies are reeling from that, having to shift more towards showing a profit. Once they get to a profitable state, they'll loosen their purse strings. That could take a few years for some. Meanwhile, they're being cheap: loading up their staff with work, hiring only in cheaper countries, etc. The firings seem to be over, at least.
Part of the "cheap" direction seems to be that Scala engineers cost more, so let's dump Scala and replace it with Java (or some other language whose programmers are cheaper). Race-to-the bottom decisions made by bean counters. I'll credit them with trying to keep their companies afloat, but you need to understand software, too: every company is a software company these days.
I watch the number of searches per month that I appear in, on my LI home page. It's a seventh of what it was pre-Covid, and a fourth of what it was before the interest rate increases. Expect things to be different than they have been 2008-2022. | 06:48:30 |
