tomaldcroft | I just put in a pull request to update the astropy Get Help page. This is an attempt to respond to results of the Astropy Community Engagement survey: https://github.com/astropy/astropy.github.com/pull/581
Notably, it includes a proposal to add a #community-help channel to the astropy Slack. If you would like to discuss that particular part of the PR then I think that replying in a thread here is probably the best strategy. I understand there may be a variety of opinions on this topic! | 15:57:03 |
pllim | tomaldcroft, thanks! Looks like quiet a significant change. Do you want to cross post to astropy-dev list too? | 18:03:42 |
Cadair | In reply to @slack_astropy_U774ARTKR:openastronomy.orgDespite my reservations on the dev call, on reflection I think it's a good idea. | 18:13:56 |
pllim | Stuart supports a channel in Slack? :notsureif: | 18:14:43 |
Cadair | In reply to @slack_astropy_U774ARTKR:openastronomy.orgAll your slack channels are matrix channels | 18:15:09 |
tomaldcroft | Thanks Cadair your support is quite meaningful. I just think we need to do something in response to the survey findings. Otherwise what is the point. | 18:42:22 |
Cadair | In reply to @slack_astropy_U0LE97SBD:openastronomy.org I do worry a little about confusion between all the insane number of channels we already have and the one blessed channel for questions. | 18:43:33 |
Cadair | In reply to @cadair:cadair.comMaybe we can make it so slack auto joins it or suggests it somehow? (My slack foo is nonexistent) | 18:44:13 |
tomaldcroft | That's a great idea. I seem to recall something like that. Will google... | 18:44:53 |
Cadair | In reply to @cadair:cadair.comMy worry is a new slack user coming in to ask a question and getting bamboozled | 18:44:57 |

pllim | What about this? š¤·āāļø https://slack.com/resources/using-slack/how-to-organize-your-slack-channels | 18:46:11 |
tomaldcroft | The "getting bamboozled" applies to many user forums. I think in general the astropy community is small enough and generally respectful. And we do have a code of conduct. I posted something to the Intel user forum complaining about impossible-to-stop warning messages from MKL and got a really stupid and annoying response from a random user. So it goes... | 18:48:42 |

Beryl Kanali | Jonah Duckles and I discussed implementing something similar to this. Like a welcome channel where new members coming in start from there and it will come with something like a welcome message with brief descriptions of which channel to join or resource link to read(eg contributing) depending on needs. Eg if looking for help, information, community updates etc. Some communities have that and it helps with the 'being bamboozled' issue. The welcome message also reminds the new member about the code of conduct. | 15:07:59 |
Juan Luis Cano | didn't see any responses in the astropy-dev thread so I sent an email Derek Homeier | 16:51:08 |
