I commented on T1029: Contact Installatron and T187514: Documentation for bringing a MediaWiki site online

I am not sure really of the lay of the land or the proper protocols for getting involved in a greater capacity. I guess it would start with a personal introduction? I am a bit at a loss at the moment, on how to do get more involved. Most of it isn't of great importance, but I really feel strongly about looking at mediawiki.org protections so I can update the documentation as I learn mediawiki.

Most of it isn't of great importance such as contacting installatron or cloudblue, but I really feel strongly about looking at mediawiki.org protections so I can update the documentation as I learn mediawiki.

I am starting from scratch so it provides a great opportunity to look at the documentation with some fresh beginner eyes.

I am building an event wiki, for the City of Ottawa, I am happy to fill everyone in, but the gist of it, is that I will be using Sam Wilson calendar, cargo with page forms as the foundation for the wiki.

This is a long term project, so obviously the first step is really to bridge my knowledge gap, and get a proper lay of the land. The Mediawiki verse is a lot bigger than I expected. It is quite vast at a first glance, so right now I am recording resources and sites as I go along, https://julientremblaymclellan.miraheze.org/wiki/wikiverse.

I do realize that the content is infantile at the moment, but the point is to use it actively, and let my understanding and the content evolve as I progress.

I am starting with miraheze to understand what a deployed managed wiki looks like, while still getting my hands wet with some basic beginner stuff, mostly as making the most of the mediawiki installation.

@jtm-lis:matrix.orgjtmlisI have not really gone in depth at all as of yet, I have been doing surface learning and getting a feel for things, doing an in between the brackets binge, and subbing to mediawiki blogs, most of them written by the people in this group. Next up is to watch a backlog of conference videos, and to read Yaron Koren's book. I am studying full time, so it is very annoying that I can't devote more time . Anyway I guess that is way more than I planned to say. Really if anyone could guide me on how to get mediawiki to open a dialogue about user rights to edit pages that would be a fantastic starting point for me to start doing my part to contribute where I can.04:56:08
@jtm-lis:matrix.orgjtmlisand it goes without saying that the archlinux wiki is really a strong inspiration of mine, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Main_page I think it has to be one of the top technical wikis on the web at the moment that is public facing.04:58:42

Hi jtm-lis, can you explain this a bit? Are you asking how to encourage users to edit a wiki? Are you trying to restrict editing?

@jtm-lis:matrix.orgjtmlis Bryan Hilderbrand: nevermind, I am just a dunce, i think it is time for me to get some sleep. I mistook the following as no editing rights, even though I am logged in. 05:23:49
@jtm-lis:matrix.orgjtmliswow, im st00pid, anyway I will leave my messages, and edit them for clarification 05:24:56

I'm a fool and looked at the wrong place.

@jtm-lis:matrix.orgjtmlis well that was embarrassing. time for bed thank you Bryan Hilderbrand you helped me last time as well, I popped in this room too. It is very much appreciated. 05:30:57
@bryandamon:matrix.orgBryan Hilderbrand Hi jtm-lis, sorry for the delay. It looks like you are asking about protections on the MediaWiki.org site (which can be extended to any MediaWiki based wiki). The Autoconfirmed users group is defined on that page, but just prevents against spam edits from new accounts. You can see all the User Groups at that last link with their associated rights. 16:12:03
@jtm-lis:matrix.orgjtmlisbryandamon, i got my irc bridge working now. okay thanks for the docs. 18:08:30
@hexmode:matrix.orghexmode jtm-lis: I saw you put in a request for the mwstake.org wiki and sent me the confirmation email? You're supposed to click the link in the email to confirm your email. 19:53:36
@jtm-lis:matrix.orgjtmlishexmode: yeah sorry, I was subbing to mailing list, and replied to the wrong email. I am logged in at the moment20:08:05

Hi Julien, we can discuss it here, but the best way is the contact form on the blog page: https://mediawikiexperts.blog/about-us/contact-us/

@thomasoneill:matrix.orgthomasoneillDOE has a few interns trying to get Pywikibot running on their personal instance of Meza. Does anyone know if there is an updated version of https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Pywikibot/Use_on_third-party_wikis#Family_file? They are especially having some difficulties with the family files.20:53:27
@freephile:matrix.orgrundgI've used it in the past, but unfortunately my recent attempts to use Pywikibot have all failed login. That may have to do with using PluggableAuth/OpenIDConnect rather than Pywikibot per se.21:57:24
