deadcade | But Discord's main business model is getting as many users as possible, appearing to be a partially paid service, then selling for an insane amount of money because of their large userbase. Also the amount of data they collect is just ridiculous. | 14:24:03 |
casey | which also brings up the whole if you're not paying for the product, you are the product | 14:24:46 |
deadcade | In reply to @_discord_95592619496706048:t2bot.io which also brings up the whole if you're not paying for the product, you are the product Which is pretty much always true outside of FOSS | 14:25:39 |

casey | what's the FOSS saying? free speech != free beer? | 14:27:13 |
deadcade | I've seen some FOSS devs do the funny and make their prebuilt binaries paid. | 14:28:30 |

Skyler Hawthorne | casey: Yeah, they are not the same thing, but I think it's possible you've touched on what may be the line of thinking: conflating freemium bait and switches and open source authors trying to solicit compensation for their work | 14:30:48 |

Skyler Hawthorne | In reply to @_discord_95592619496706048:t2bot.io which also brings up the whole if you're not paying for the product, you are the product The thing I think many forget when they hear and recite this line (not you, just anecdotally from what I've seen in the past) is that this goes both ways. It's not free for the service provider either | 14:35:04 |
casey | exactly, nothing is free | 14:35:47 |
casey | ntfy isn't free -- it costs binwiederhier's time (and money for infra) | 14:36:35 |
sarab | casey: YEs very nicely written. This case I have seen a lot. This is really immoral. I would like to share one such case in my country a new mobile network company was launched by a business man initially giving totally free services like calls sms and internet. Previously mobile network costs used to be pretty high but when this company launched rest of companies tried to reduce the cost but they could only do it to a limit. because everyone switched to this new compnay who gave complete network access for free. Rest of companies suffered losses and shut down. So from around 10 mobile network provider choices. Now only one other company remains and this company and services of both are just terrible. | 14:38:43 |
