Anyone seen this, thoughts? https://physicstoday.scitation.org/do/10.1063/PT.6.1.20210305a/full/
Actually, it's not a great article. Nevermind lol. Doesn't make any strong statements and just fluffs around. I rarely read Physics Today but I expected this to be good.

Today there's a helpful article in Nature titled 'How to get started in quantum computing' (Nature 591, 166) with pointers to many resources.
Thanks a lot

@accraze:matrix.orgaccrazeHas anyone here watched the show Devs? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8134186/?ref_=tt_urv17:12:19
@accraze:matrix.orgaccrazeits the first thing i've seen with quantum computing as part of the central plot17:12:34

I haven't seen it. Scott Aaronson, who's an expert on quantum complexity and q computing (and -IMHO- an entertaining and instructive blogger) reviewed it last spring: https://www.scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=4740

@accraze:matrix.orgaccrazehaha yes i agree with this review, it's certainly a work of fiction18:49:37
@accraze:matrix.orgaccraze“How many qubits does this thing have?” “A number that there would be no point in describing as a number.” ROFL18:52:57

What does the hive mind think about this article? I was surprised, since I've gotten so jaded reading so much absolute drivel and fear-mongering around quantum computers and cryptocurrency. Best one I've come across in a while. https://medium.com/iovlabs-innovation-stories/post-quantum-cryptography-e48c2e54967b
it seems like a fair assessment to me. One should note, though, that the post-quantum methods are not know to be quantum-proof, but nobody is known to have found an efficient algorithm yet. (the same is true for factoring on a classical computer, the difference being 2000y vs <20y of looking for one). I recall a talk (about arXiv:1711.10377) which estimated what progress in QCis needed to pose a threat to the bitcoin protocol. In addition to better classical protocols (and protocols to move to them securely R SOc open sci 5:180410) there are also discussions to upgrade the blockchain protocol with /quantum/ key distribution for a different route to quantum-proof block chain (Quantum Sci Technol 3:035004). I'm not sure how relevant the problem discussed in the latter (that a q comp might dominate blockchain computing, thereby allowing it to monopolize mining) really is. BTW: anyboody holding back bitcoin investments due to fear of quantum computers? 😀

@michelle:feneas.orgmichelleYeah, you don't know what you don't know. The post-quantum cryptography looks great, and it really is (until it isn't) but it seems like we're quite a long way away from having lots of QC algorithms. When we get powerful computers, we'll get powerful algorithms. The heavy lifting so far got done mostly on chalkboards!06:29:43
