@wistex:matrix.orgScott M. Stolz joined the room.08:01:08
@wistex:matrix.orgScott M. StolzHello. I saw your note on the GitHub project. I would be interested in helping keep this project alive. How can I help?08:02:46
@wistex:matrix.orgScott M. StolzI also have an idea on how to attract more users and developers. You are already one of the only web fonts that have icons for the fediverse. For example, you have Hubzilla and Scuttlebutt. You don't see those anywhere else. I would lean into that, and promote ForkAwesome as a web font for the fediverse. 08:26:57
@douginamug:matrix.orgDoug Scott M. Stolz: welcome and thanks for the interest! The coverage of fedi icons was also an attraction for me. Did you manage to read the retrospective I made? https://github.com/ForkAwesome/Fork-Awesome/blob/master/posts/2023-04-10_forkawesomeIntrospection/forkawesomeIntrospection.md It critically looks at the project from several angles, and I wouldn't want anyone to invest too much energy into the project without knowing that stuff first. Thomas Clavier: was also interested to reinvigorate the project, and put in some solid work updating the dev environment/build process. Thomas seems to not have so much ability to continue contributing right now though. wakest: helped compile a bunch of fediverse icons on a wiki page, but I can never remember where... Link us once more? 🥹 12:45:12
@wakest:matrix.orgwakestHello all! Yeah I have an ongoing project to make good quality icons for ALL of the fediverse software. I never got around to publishing all my work but a lot of icons are up on this page I was working on a while ago https://joinfediverse.wiki/Fediverse_project_branding13:54:11
@wakest:matrix.orgwakestI also got involved in the forkawesome project because of its Fediverse icon coverage, and I think that making that explicit going forward would be a good direction13:56:13

Yes, I read the introspective. And I am glad that Thomas Clavier stepped up to the plate to keep the project alive. And I agree with something he said. He said that we should keep the project alive while we figure out how to retool it. When we retool it, we can account version 2.0 (or whatever). But too many projects use this icon set to simply discontinue it. So I am willing to help keep it alive.

@wistex:matrix.orgScott M. StolzI think your main problem is "yet another icon font" syndrome. I remember when I first saw that Hubzilla was using Fork Awesome instead of Font Awesome and the first thing I wondered was "why?" And I did not find an answer, and my assumption was that it was forked for philosophical reasons and wasn't much different than Font Awesome. I now understand that Font Awesome has fediverse icons that Font Awesome does not have, so it was natural for Hubzilla to use it instead. But that was not communicated. And I think that needs to be communicated.19:37:06

I think if we promoted that on the website itself, it would differentiate our icon set from everyone else, and it also attract more fediverse projects who need these icons.

And, I am just throwing ideas out here, but, one option is to work on the branding. For example:

  1. Fork Awesome is still used for version 1.2 of the font, since that is what people are used to and know it by.
  2. We come up with a new unique name for Version 2.0 of the font. Something that tells people this is something new and different.
  3. On the website, we have both Fork Awesome (v1.2) and the new brand (v2). We get traffic and bookmarks for both, which means if they look up Fork Awesome, we see we have a new icon set as well.

@wistex:matrix.orgScott M. StolzAs I said, I am just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. Take what you will.19:47:46

@douginamug:matrix.orgDougI really appreciate your enthusiasm! I agree that the large user base is a reason to keep forkawesome alive. I am personally not willing to keep working on it, for reasons I outlined in the introspective. I am happy to grant access to people who are!08:24:42
@douginamug:matrix.orgDougA project to make fedi-icon SVG set would interest me though. Transforming forkawesome into such a project makes some sense, but I think a whole new brand (as you suggest) would make more sense.08:26:16
@douginamug:matrix.orgDougPlease let me know how I could help enable you to make the developments you're thinking of 😃08:28:23
