@danielp3344:matrix.orgDaniel Peterson Where might I scavenge an op amp? I need an audio preamplifier for a project and don't want to wait for shipping, I checked all my stashes of parts and found only one ancient 741 that appears to be fried.16:21:14

@sora5:matrix.orgsora5Anybody here? I need your opinion on this, I have made a linear power supply wth a step down transformer that outputs 13V there are four wires coming out of the secondary winding. I only used one, then it goes to LM7812 to create 12V to power a fan that cools the transformer. Now, I need to make 5v output using LM7805, which is recommended putting LM7805 to the output of the bridge rectifier (13V) or to the output of LM7812 (12V)?09:51:23

LM7812 needs at least 14.5 V on input

miw 's concern is valid, hypothetically speaking I would put such a load at an earlier stage, at rectified 13V. Otherwise, the current that is drawn from 5V will be drawn from LM7812, will heat it linearly.

@mehmet:grusbv.comMehmet AliI would recommend implementing a switch mode power supply for such high voltage ratio power converters. If you need a very clean voltage, you can then use an LDO to achieve that with much less efficiency hit.12:51:03
@sora5:matrix.orgsora5Hi, yes the transformer outputs around 18v on load. But I don't have any info about the transformer current capability. I just used a smps instead of this.14:18:43
@sora5:matrix.orgsora5Thanks for the info about this.14:19:08
