@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kDo you guys have any ideas on how you will be long-term funding your mesh?13:46:42
@lurker42o:matrix.orglurkerI really like the idea of building a federation of "Internet buying clubs" -- like 10 - 50 members each -- that handle financing their network(s) independently. Then we get to stay out of the way for the most part.13:56:59
@lurker42o:matrix.orglurkerThat's what we've been building toward so far, but we also have been using Open Collective to gather donations and reimburse (so far just me) for buying equipment that ends up deployed in the field. Kind of a basic way for people to get a mesh node that is a little more transparent than "give me a check and I'll pick you up a router at Micro Center."14:01:18
@lurker42o:matrix.orglurkerhbu?14:01:44
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kWell CURRENTLY the super node has been funded by Pedro's hardware he has in a shelf and the rest from my own pocket ☹️ I got a grant to do the initial push that we are still waiting to come in.16:04:41
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kHowever we have had discussion on how to build out this model moving forward. Discussions of a donation model like NYC mesh was floated.16:05:07
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2k(if you use the service a suggested recurring donation of X)16:05:22
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2ki think your description of the clubs is sometihng we would like to see. I dotn think we can as a single org be able to manage community mesh networks. Our hope is that the core group can provide the "larger" infustructure across the city and get local groups take up the mantel of pushing the mesh into their local community16:06:44
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kWe are trying to keep the mesh as open as possible from an interopoerability perspective to encourge a diverse means of local deployments. If some one wants to use althea to build an incentivised mesh, were cool with that16:07:26
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kstill have to figure out how all the peices fit together. We have been to busy on dealing with deployment as those limelines are none-movable and an opportunity like no other has come along. but the conversation has come up.16:08:02
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kthe tricky part is our "mesh" is not a legal entity. So we are depended on our "neighbors" who have standing in the eyes of the law to to deal to deal with the legal relationships we need (like ARIN to get an ASN)16:09:03
@lurker42o:matrix.orglurkerinteroperability++ I really like this thinking... How big is the network you maintain rn?16:14:04
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2k(oh yeh were thinking of open collective to)16:15:00
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kalthough i have this stretch goal to do a 8 mile link between our first super node and the second one. 1/2 tempted to do like a go fund me16:15:26
@lurker42o:matrix.orglurkerthat would be super rad to see.. what is that 900Mhz?16:17:17

which neighbors??
16:24:14
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kSo free geek is our fiscal host for the grant17:14:49
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kHypha.Coop will get an Arin for us17:14:58

Are physical deployment has literally just started last month
17:15:18
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kBetween some City initiatives and some very cool people we got to put up antennas with a very low overhead. And we will have several more opportunities to do so as long as the money doesn't run out17:15:49
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2k But we are really. At the very beginning of this 17:18:34
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2k(oh by neighbours I don't mean physically I mean other value aligned groups) 17:20:14
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2k* (oh by neighbours I don't mean physically I mean other value aligned groups) 17:21:18

So apperently we can do it with 5ghz. https://link.ui.com/#p=b60b364fa05c41eb8b1a3aa05c0951ee

@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2k * Hypha.Coop will get an Arin for us17:42:35
@Stephen304:matrix.orgStephen304Ah yeah essentially what we plan to do for longer range links17:51:44
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kyeh but not cheap18:42:59
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2ki dont know if i trust the AIRMAX24 at that range18:45:22
@darkdrgn2k:tomesh.netDarkDrgn2kat 2.5KM we did about 50mps18:45:29
