Brule | and can you receive SMS messages? | 00:45:50 |
deimos | from experience, it's t-mobile | 01:05:39 |
deimos | only works in the usa | 01:05:57 |
Brule | What about the signal strength and use if you're on the road a lot (like full time RVing)? | 01:14:17 |
deimos | whatever t-mobile provides | 01:23:31 |
nickcalyx | In reply to @dingus_:matrix.org with the calyx hotspot, what are the bands it operates on?
Is the service spotty outside of cities in the US?
can you travel with this and consistently use it in different locations? (every two weeks 200 miles in a different location) it operates on all of tmobile's bands | 01:29:08 |
nickcalyx | not just the educational broadband spectrum one ( which by the way is known as LTE b41 or 5G n71 and is one of the best bands ) | 01:29:39 |
wave | I was actually wondering, with the lawsuit that happened recently about providers selling location data, does the Calyx foundation have a way to prevent that for their supporters with memberships or are we all SOL on that? | 01:30:34 |
nickcalyx | the hotspots are exactly the same ones tmobile offers and operate on all the same bands.. the only difference is the calyx ones don't have a data throughput limit or throttling past a certain point. we have people using 1TB, 2TB, 3TB per month and there is no known limit | 01:30:36 |
nickcalyx | In reply to @wave:jameuwu.com I was actually wondering, with the lawsuit that happened recently about providers selling location data, does the Calyx foundation have a way to prevent that for their supporters with memberships or are we all SOL on that? we have 0 control over that, it's t-mobile's network.. and we have no insight into what's going on internally there | 01:31:40 |
wave | I figured, i was curious to know if there was possibly something though. | 01:32:08 |
nickcalyx | unfortunately not.. but you can sign up for calyx service without your real identity so that's something | 01:32:36 |
Brule | What about restrictions for using this across the country?. My in laws retired and live in an RV, and are looking for an internet Hotspot that will allow them to use it anywhere without penalty.
They currently have the "t-mobile home internet" and that's getting cracked down on soon for those using it away from their address: https://www.androidauthority.com/t-mobile-home-internet-plus-5g-address-validation-3436833/ | 01:45:58 |
nickcalyx | we have tons of RV people | 01:47:31 |
nickcalyx | https://www.rvmobileinternet.com/tag/calyx/ | 01:48:16 |
Brule | Awesome. I'll be letting them know tomorrow about it. Maybe I'll even dip my toes in the water about privacy.... They have a Google home in their RV... | 01:48:23 |
nickcalyx | there are a number of videos on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=calyx+rv+internet | 01:51:35 |
Brule | Thats awesome. Hopefully they'll dig deeper into the organization and start down the rabbit hole of privacy.
What's the advantage of getting anything but the contributor level, besides also getting 5G? Larger radius for the Hotspot? | 01:53:21 |
nickcalyx | the hotspot hardware is also better at the higher levels | 01:55:59 |
nickcalyx | some of them have ethernet out for instance | 01:56:06 |
nickcalyx | nicer screens, etc | 01:56:25 |
deimos | from using the hotspot for a year, it works great and connects from almost everywhere i've tried | 01:58:42 |
Brule | Gotcha. That's kind of what I gathered too. I'm definitely passing this along to them. Unfortunately I'm the family "tech person" even though I told them I just ask smarter people than me on matrix chat haha. | 01:59:25 |
deimos | "matrix, like the movie?" | 01:59:46 |
deimos | i travel a lot, so i'm sure tmo wonders where their hotspot will appear next | 02:00:17 |
Brule | Redacted or Malformed Event | 02:01:55 |
Brule | In reply to @deimos:nitro.chat "matrix, like the movie?" I get it now. Yeah that's what they say haha | 02:02:22 |
Brule | Hey nick one last thing, if I were to get this Hotspot and use it as my phone service with voip (no sim in my phone just connect to this via wifi) could I still receive sms messages? | 02:03:09 |
deimos | in fact, the only place I had it not work, was just outside Fresno, CA where apparently the towers are Verizon only and any device can connect and get full 5G, but not pass traffic. | 02:03:42 |
nickcalyx | In reply to @dingus_:matrix.org Hey nick one last thing, if I were to get this Hotspot and use it as my phone service with voip (no sim in my phone just connect to this via wifi) could I still receive sms messages? that's more of a question for the voip provider you choose | 02:06:21 |
