bahuma20 | Hey there. I have spent some time googling by now, but couldn't find something.
I am running a single user Mastodon instance and want to enable some relays to bring content to my feed.
But the problem is when enabling bridges, a lot of disk space is needed because every file is copied to my server.
I already switched to using some S3 storage but that just moves the problem and still introduces costs.
Now i am wondering if there is the possibility to disable storing files on my instance and instead loads it on the fly from the source instance...
Maybe some software that acts as S3 compatible storage but does not really store the files? 🤔 | 15:44:52 |
Emelia Smith — ThisIsMissEm@hachyderm.io | You could try using the Content Retention settings, there's screenshots in: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/27733 | 15:51:09 |

bahuma20 | Yeah, tried that but even when i set it to 1 day i still end up with around 200 Gigabytes used...
I would more prefer not to store anything at all. Only when it is requested from the Browser... | 15:54:59 |
Emelia Smith — ThisIsMissEm@hachyderm.io | maybe this is something to ask the relay's about? | 16:07:05 |

damon_ | Are you utilising a CDN? | 16:20:30 |
bahuma20 | In reply to @damon_:matrix.org Are you utilising a CDN? No. But i don't know how this would reduce disk storage 🤔 | 16:43:47 |
bahuma20 | In reply to @thisismissem-52de47d1ed5ab0b3bf05490b:gitter.im maybe this is something to ask the relay's about? As far as i understood, the relays are just pushing posts from people i don't follow to my instance. So they can't affect how files are stored on my instance | 16:45:14 |

Emelia Smith — ThisIsMissEm@hachyderm.io | yes they do — as soon as you receive a post, your instance crawls the links and downloads the associated media so it can show you said post. | 16:48:49 |
