aktaboot | In reply to @kelig:infursec.fr ( because I must have windows because eGPU :'p could dual boot but too lazy to press buttons and wait ) Yeah I dont see why an eGpu setup requires you to have Windows | 20:17:55 |
Kelinon Gavig | Because nVidia SUCCS | 21:39:32 |
Wilfried Klaebe | are there no AMD eGPUs? | 21:43:21 |
Kelinon Gavig | I mean, there are AMD GPUs that I could shove in the enclose but I'm not rich asf enough to just ditch my old GPU and buy an AMD one xD | 21:44:13 |

Kelinon Gavig | I already have a 3080, and I found the razer core for 100 bucks on ebay so that was a good compromise | 21:45:10 |
Wilfried Klaebe | AFAIK, nvidia GPUs aren't exactly cheap either | 21:48:42 |
Kelinon Gavig | Yep but I already have it x3 | 21:51:06 |
Wilfried Klaebe | okay, that's a problem indeed... | 21:52:19 |
Kelinon Gavig | I bought it like 2 years ago so no need for another GPU | 21:52:33 |
Tavi (he/they) | In reply to @kelig:infursec.fr I already have a 3080, and I found the razer core for 100 bucks on ebay so that was a good compromise i have a 1070 in my eGPU enclosure and it works on NixOS on my 11th gen intel framework | 23:25:18 |
Tavi (he/they) | just because a card is nvidia doesn't mean it won't work in eGPU on linux | 23:25:30 |
Wilfried Klaebe | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_36yNWw_07g though | 23:57:41 |

Kelinon Gavig | In reply to @asonix:matrix.asonix.dog i have a 1070 in my eGPU enclosure and it works on NixOS on my 11th gen intel framework Did you change something in xOrg for it to function smoothly ? o3o | 06:12:48 |
aktaboot | My biggest problems with Nvidia is when I had a dGpu one, It gave me so much hell I disabled dGpu and finally sold the laptop. eGpu might not be the same story but I would personally still avoid Nvidia at all costs | 07:07:08 |
Kelinon Gavig | Because I did try to make it work on many distros, and while it was kinda natively working on fedora and ubuntu, performance were really crap and drivers didn't fix anything. ( nouveau or proprietary ones, same story ) | 07:43:52 |
Kelinon Gavig | And there was no "hotplug" like in windows where you can start the 'puter in my room then shove the USB4 after moving my butt to the desk in the living-room and *poof* many screens | 07:45:19 |

Wilfried Klaebe | hotplugging GPUs is still not supported in Xorg, afaik | 10:25:00 |
Wilfried Klaebe | no idea about Wayland | 10:25:28 |
Tavi (he/they) | In reply to @kelig:infursec.fr Did you change something in xOrg for it to function smoothly ? o3o Yeah I have a Specialization for booting with the eGPU plugged into back right or back left slot that sets the nvidia GPU as primary instead of intel | 13:04:19 |
Tavi (he/they) | There's a systemd service that other distros can use for detecting eGPU on boot and loading the right xorg configuration. I forget the name, though | 13:05:30 |
