At the moment the document just lists the fields per message type and doesn't include information about the wire-specific encoding, since that's likely to change anyway
Sounds like a serde-compatible library incoming :)

@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderWell there are an awful lot of binary encodings in the world so rolling our own long-term doesn't necessarily make sense09:35:04
@shadowjonathan:matrix.org[Jonathan]As long as it’s documented what kind of ordering or fields you expect in the encodings, I think it’ll be fine09:37:00
@shadowjonathan:matrix.org[Jonathan] What does pinecone currently run on, btw? 09:37:07
@shadowjonathan:matrix.org[Jonathan](Over TCP)09:37:13
@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderIt's custom binary encoding that I wrote at the moment09:40:33
@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderWhich is simple enough, but using flatbuffers or something might be easier for other people to grok09:41:02
@jboi:jboi.nlJonathanyou mean protobuf?10:02:23
@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderWell flatbuffers are more efficient than protobufs10:03:25
@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderThe problem with protobufs is that they generally result in a lot of copying in the marshalling/unmarshalling stages10:13:59
@andybalaam:matrix.organdybalaamBARE might be worth considering https://drewdevault.com/2020/06/21/BARE-message-encoding.html10:18:09
@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderHm, it doesn't have a specification yet?10:19:35
@andybalaam:matrix.organdybalaamDraft here: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-devault-bare/10:22:53
@andybalaam:matrix.organdybalaamSorry, here: https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-devault-bare-01.txt10:23:35
@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderInteresting10:25:45
@andybalaam:matrix.organdybalaamI've never used it, but I sometimes agree with Drew on things :-)10:26:10
@neilalexander:matrix.orgneilalexanderWorth adding to the list to look at for sure10:26:28
