@beatlejuice_oxff:matrix.org | Whats the idea behind ditching the rack? noise, space, power consumption? | 09:11:28 |
@bigstrongcoolguy:matrix.org | In reply to @beatlejuice_oxff:matrix.org Whats the idea behind ditching the rack? noise, space, power consumption? definitely space. but mostly my priorities have changed since building out this rack. i live in a small space and have a young kid now :) | 15:20:24 |
@beatlejuice_oxff:matrix.org | bigstrongcoolguy: i guess some diy itx build will do. one that you can put somewhere out of reach from little hands :) there are even redundant powersupplies available in standard atx formfactor. iirk called FSP twins. Not cheap and not really silent, but no screamers afaik. for the other HW Intel or AMD platform will do, since both have ecc support, up to 128gb ram and a good bunch of cores. unfortunately xeon d boards are rather expensive. | 17:15:11 |
@bigstrongcoolguy:matrix.org | something like that sounds perfect. hide it away in a cabinet or media console | 17:20:47 |
@beatlejuice_oxff:matrix.org | if you gonna put it into a confined space, make sure it has sufficient ventilation. - computers are mostly expensive space heaters still ;) | 17:36:12 |
@bigstrongcoolguy:matrix.org | does anyone know who the admins of this room are? | 19:36:01 |

@james:jameskitt616.one | ah typical matrix client featureset moment | 19:40:01 |
@bigstrongcoolguy:matrix.org | jcgruenhage: are you able/willing to upgrade this room’s version? the matrix homeserver i typically use isn’t compatible with older room versions :( | 19:41:30 |

@bigstrongcoolguy:matrix.org | In reply to @oscar:prutt.party what homeserver btw? dendrite? i’m trying out conduit → https://conduit.rs | 12:01:07 |
@oscar:prutt.party | ah nice | 12:09:06 |
@oscar:prutt.party | I'm back with synapse, ran dendrite for a while but couldn't migrate old chats to it | 12:09:39 |
@bigstrongcoolguy:matrix.org | i'm trying to squeeze what i can out of the fly.io free tier, and conduit seems to be very efficient | 14:34:10 |
@oscar:prutt.party | my free instance at Oracle runs with 4 cores and 24 GB of RAM, and I find it sometimes struggles with big rooms....... | 16:36:28 |
HybridSarcasm | 4/24 is free on Oracle? Man, they must be desperate to lure us in. | 16:39:55 |

ifiguero | probably free tier is low priority. I find that its quite slow for the resources it has. | 00:38:07 |

@bigstrongcoolguy:matrix.org | conduit seems to be holding up quite well on the fairly limited fly.io free tier | 01:56:27 |

@oscar:prutt.party | In reply to @hybridsarcasm:matrix.org 4/24 is free on Oracle? Man, they must be desperate to lure us in. it's their old ARM stuff, it's great for uses like mine. you get 2 VMs with 1 core X86 as well | 06:35:58 |
@oscar:prutt.party | my homeserver is setup with ansible and I take backups of files and database, so if it gets shut down I can move it elsewhere | 06:36:37 |
