What are your thoughts on what is happening in this regard? I'm invited to a podcast today to talk about this and I wanted the perspective of the hackerspace community: Here are both news as a reference: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/22/hackers-try-to-steal-covid-vaccine-secrets-in-intellectual-property-war https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/18/biohacking-online-forums-coronavirus-vaccines-testing Thanks! | 16:51:34 |

About five years ago, this ML discussed where to best get a laser cutter. At Coredump hackerspace we're also thinking about buying one. Here are our goals: - At least 40x60cm working area, a bit larger would be better (but <100cm) - Adjustable bed - At least 50W - Air assist - Ruida controller - Nice to have: Autofocus - Budget: Ideally around 2500 CHF / 2800 USD total cost (including shipping, modifications, etc) but 3000 CHF / 3300 USD would probably work as well The obvious choice nowadays would be the generic Chinese 50-60W Blue-White/Yellow-Black lasers by Orion Motor Tech (aka OMTECH), the bigger versions of the K40. I found a lot of good guides on YouTube[0][1] and they seem to be very affordable (as long as you're ready to do some fixing and mods yourself). However, Amazon doesn't really ship to Switzerland, and I haven't found many Ebay sellers that look serious and who ship to Switzerland. The ones I found are from non-EU eastern Europe or China, so I probably wouldn't have any advantage compared to directly ordering from China. [0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aChvqAA86QM [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHclUKSMzqY That reminded me of the G.Weike recommendation that a few of you posted on here in the previous e-mail thread. Their machines do seem to look very solid[2], but maybe outside our budget? (It's a bit hard to find actual prices on Alibaba.) [2] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp4tMvWjSNs That brings me to my five questions: - In 2021, would you still recommend G.Weike, or is Orion a better deal? - Do you have links to Ebay or Alibaba sellers that ship Orion lasers internationally and with whom you've made good experiences? - Do you have a contact at G.Weike with whom you've made good experiences? - Any other laser recommendations? Cheers and have a safe 2021, Danilo | 16:59:09 |

Given the current pandemic situation, where many makerspaces are closed to slow down the spread of Covid-19, this survey provides a space for you to share your thoughts. How do you experience this situation, where you are unable to visit your local makerspace or open workshop? The survey is part of a research project at the Department of Human Geography in Lund, Sweden. Here you find the survey and as well as further information: https://sunet.artologik.net/lu/Survey/32011/en Please share the invitation with others who might have something to say on the matter. I'm looking forward to receiving your answers! Corinna | 17:03:22 |

This means I need need to tackle the elephant that is clean my windows. In normal non-*gestures at the whole situation* times, I'd probably just harness up and borrow the appropriate temporary fall arrest gear from work - perhaps buy my upstairs neighbors a case of beer in return for letting me put a pair of parapet clamp anchors on their window sill, or a doorjamb anchor, or something similar. However - there is a pandemic on and it's been a year since I've done *any* work at height, let alone actually doing any complex ropework, so I turn to the ehlab-and-adjacent hivemind - how would you attack this problem? ;) my 2 cents. | 18:27:11 |

This thread is about "decision making with the help of software". Huuuuuge subject, even treated in movies, animes, books, etc. (do we need IA for this ?) I'v found the software I'm talking about below : echo.to. the website seems to have disapeared surely because of RoR ! ;D not kidding, the project took some money from EU and disapeared ! that's not cool at all. I'v found traces of it on way back machine : https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://echo.to The project code is still online on github : https://github.com/echosystem/echo Anyway, "WikiDebats" is better and alive ! Big up to the people behind it ! <3 ! https://fr.wikidebates.org/wiki/Portail:D%C3%A9bats (one of my favorite question is : https://fr.wikidebates.org/wiki/Dieu_existe-t-il_%3F but there's a lot of other ones that deserve much attention.) Does your hackerspace have a large pile of empty 3D printing filament reels stashed after the CV19 PPE printing efforts? Here at Midsouth Makers , we have several giant trash bags worth. We're sending our collected empty filament reels to IC3D Printers, a filament manufacturer & print services bureau in Columbus Ohio. Disclosure, I'm lucky enough to work with them. If you'd like to help keep any IC3D and Micro Center Inland brand empty filament reels out of the landfill and give them new life, they'll be used to spool Recycled PETG filament and sent out for reuse. More details & to sign up for the experimental launch of the Spool Return System: https://www.ic3dprinters.com/introducing-the-ic3d-spool-return-system/ If you'd like to deliver the empty IC3D/Inland brand filament reels to Columbus, Ohio in person, IC3D is hosting a socially-distanced Open House, RSVP here: https://www.ic3dprinters.com/event/first-annual-spool-return-day/ Happy hacking!
