I came to this conclusion: pay the people a little more than average. Remove everything else. Why? Unfair pay leads to dissatisfaction; fair pay doesn’t lead to motivation, it leads to no dissatisfaction. It is a hygiene factor. So, keep your organisational hygiene high and focus on what really motivates people — satisfaction from delivering a great product that the customers love. 15:55:01

I'd even go this far to say that every bonus payment leads to dissatisfaction at least when the amount is bound to the career level.
