@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve So really Althea’s value prop is making it easier for those who have internet connections to act as effective middlemen between backhauls and end customers, or “nodes” in a mesh network. 06:36:56
@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve Sort of a sharing economy around the physical infrastructure which enables people to share digital connectivity in a decentralized fashion. I think I understand thanks. I will dig into some of the traction stuff and be back with more questions later. Thanks for taking the time to explain. 06:38:14
@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve In layman's terms, right now pay an ISP for internet but I cannot really share that internet with anyone else or monetize the fact that I have an internet connection. If I wanted to have my house be a hotspot and charge other people to connect to it, I really can't. What Althea enables me to do is monetize that internet connection by letting someone else connect through me to my internet connection. While there may be other use cases this is the one that the average lay person is most likely to be able to grok. Is this correct or am I missing/misunderstanding something? 06:58:17

@_discord_477146895068823554:t2bot.iodeb_simpier Hmmm, yes in Altheas open access model, networks have no dead ends, meaning it can be extended beyond your home to participate in a public network, or you can build LTE for smart agriculture, etc.
It changes the system design of ISPs, in fact they may not even be an "ISP" anymore, as the service and infrastructure is separated.
You, as a user get to decide what you pay for (latency/cost) on a minute by minute basis, so you are no longer tied to the any service provider. The network is intelligent and picks the best upstream based on your choice.
07:01:57
@_discord_477146895068823554:t2bot.iodeb_simpier It's a bit tricky to grok, becuase it's not like most folks think about how utilities are designed all day 🙂
Justin's NANOG presentation is good if you want to get more into how it's designed now and the nuts and bolts of how Althea disrupts that.
07:05:18
@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve Ah okay so what you're saying is where I was misunderstanding is that I'm thinking of this in terms of I resell my preferred ISP's connection to someone else. But in reality it's not just that, it's that both I and everyone else on Althea can also switch between ISPs moment by moment to optimize. 07:06:15
@_discord_477146895068823554:t2bot.iodeb_simpier For the payment part, think Stripe for machines.... it enables machines, devices, infrastructure to be intelligent and make payments, even micro payments automatically. 07:06:16
@_discord_993932140418965745:t2bot.ioflynnjameson Did want to add that my lease explicitly states that I am in no way allowed to choose who my ISP is. I am coerced under legal contract to use only Cox Internet (in my region). Were I to somehow try and setup an Althea Network using my apartment, it's grounds for eviction if they found out.

Blatant violation of my right to choose who i pay money to for services
07:06:43
@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve Except ISP itself is not necessarily the right term, its more like we can switch between backhauls, which is meaningfully different from ISP in its implications as a term. 07:06:46
@_discord_477146895068823554:t2bot.iodeb_simpier Yup!
Yes system was flawed, so we are redesigning it.
07:07:28
@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve I'll check out this NANOG presentation next thanks. 07:07:36
@_discord_477146895068823554:t2bot.iodeb_simpier Right, and this is key, becuase decoupling the infrastructure allows different funding mechanisms, like Liquid Infrastructure to take place. 07:08:24
@_discord_993932140418965745:t2bot.ioflynnjameson Just a..thought, coming from Cosmos and IBC, I see....so many synergies possible with other networks it's insane. and that's not even beginning to scratch the surface. 07:08:27
@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve You know a little nice acronym could be that Althea is allowing everyone to act as a part of a DISP. 07:08:59
@_discord_874306312635318302:t2bot.ioproofofsteve Pay ISP --> Get Paid to Be DISP 07:09:14
@_discord_477146895068823554:t2bot.iodeb_simpier Great minds! I was calling it that back in 2019 Era. 07:09:35
@_discord_993932140418965745:t2bot.ioflynnjameson I'll just leave this list here for you to...look through at your leisure, Deb ;)

Akash
Fina
ALTER Network
Jackal Protocol
Passage Network
Sentinel dVPN
ICNS

@_discord_477146895068823554:t2bot.iodeb_simpier Akash and Althea teams are close! Good bunch of folks.

Just reconnected with Sentinel as well.
07:13:21
@_discord_993932140418965745:t2bot.ioflynnjameson Jackal's new tokenomics are worth checking out. From what I'm hearing, it's a real game changer for cloud-based hot storage.

ICNS moreso just relating to easing any sort of friction for payments to addresses, dunno if it necessarily would improve the process, but human-readable Name Services are all the rage everywhere.

Fina is early-stage payments, they have a crypto debit card coming to the EU 1Q24, they did $750k in revenues from their IDO on Shade Protocol in October. They're also looking to build out payments infrastructure for the IBC and others.
