Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | ha funny to see paulfree here; I follow you on Mastodon, then look for a room about the Commons, and here you are. Sometimes I think the world of Commons enthusiasts is huge, sometimes I think it is just the same people on different media 😅 | 01:55:33 |
paulfree | stragu: welcome :) I think it is hudge. (hope so). Would count all anarchists as commoners. ...but yeah that's not to much, thought otherwise revolution would have happend already. (more a joke...it's anyways always a process) | 02:04:03 |
paulfree | what's the nicest latest news you have from the commons world? | 02:05:14 |
Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | Haha yeah :) That I just created a new room that I hope will not compete with this one: #share-the-commons:matrix.org | 02:06:42 |
paulfree | xD :) | 02:06:59 |
Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | It is to specifically share files and links to Commons files and links | 02:07:10 |
Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | I think a good way to do the switch is to promote places to share the wealth that is already available in the Commons. | 02:08:42 |
Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | Instead of fighting copyright and trying to share stuff illegally, we can slowly create a new default by showing that there is already a lot available in the Commons, enough to fill a culturally fulfilling life | 02:09:44 |
paulfree | yes very true! | 02:10:46 |
Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | I like to think that we are getting to a "cultural post-scarcity" stage in which we can really make the choice of only "consuming" stuff from the Commons an avoiding copyrighted material, without feeling limited. | 02:11:12 |
paulfree | as more ppl do that it also would increase more interest in others joining to share commons.
And as more do so as higher the pressure against those fighting for copy-stop (think we should get rid of the narrative copy-right, as it's a false conception naming it a right when it's about forbitting you to copy. And it's creators it's also not really protecting neither supporting) | 02:17:06 |
paulfree | have you've seen the study made through the EU in 2014 which they hold under secret cause the finding seemed not support their politics. Was published in the summer this year through Julia pirate/green party I think | 02:19:23 |
Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | I'd love to read that, if you can send a link | 02:19:54 |

Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | paulfree: , have you had a look at the report? I think it needs further scrutiny, Julia might be simplifying or interpreting a bit too much, but I might be reading the conclusions wrong and should have a read through the whole thing, but it is a rather long document. It is also mentioned in the comments (a few of them are worth the read) that it might be the poor quality of the report that made them refrain from publishing (still unjustified in my opinion), and therefore the conclusion might not be as valuable. | 03:16:59 |
Stéphane Guillou / stragu (he/him/his) | We need to keep looking for reliable science, and this sales displacement issue is definitely something that is hard to study. I am looking forward to reading more analysis about this report. | 03:18:27 |
