Damjan Jovanovic | NAT improvement for gaming, VPNs, VOIP, etc.: Today, this patch i developed in 2017 and another developer improved more recently, was merged to FreeBSD CURRENT 🥳😊👍💯.
When using pf as your firewall, with the new "endpoint-independent" flag to the "nat" command, clients routing through it will get full-cone NAT as per RFC4787 req 1 & 3. This means that for UDP, each external port becomes owned by a distinct internal IP:port, as the first packet is routed out, and all traffic to other destinations also uses that same external port. This desirable property lets STUN work properly, often eliminates the need for static port forwarding or use of TURN servers, and helps games, VOIP, peer to peer, VPNs, and other UDP services. For example StrongSwan IPSEC is now reported to work.
I also have other patches in bugzilla to implement this feature in natd and ipfw (FreeBSD's other firewall/NAT implementations), but they haven't been committed yet. IIRC, Linux's iptables already supports it by default.

neb 🇳🇴 | I assumed Firefox (and other heavy applications) were bound to take ages to launch: until this guide claimed it could go from minutes to seconds by just correctly adjusting some kernel parameters!
