u | Thanks but I'm all good for now with the matrix room upgrades, ran a bunch of extra tests too and got the encryption out of the menagerie... just left with a dozen or so users instead of the 45 from the old room… or the 90 from one before that, all a far cry from the 414 in the room before that. | 13:22:40 |
u | FYI You can edit a tombstone, or send a new one and it automatically references the previous one. Tried editing the body text (that seems to be completely ignored in element) and it seemed to work, although element ignores that text anyway. The only trick seems to be element sees the original room and replaces it with the first tombstone, subsequent tombstones do not automatically change that. | 13:30:39 |

(I think I only saw the new rooms because I created them) | 13:53:20 |
u | I just noticed that the old old rooms have a bunch of published addresses (but no local addresses), some are even the same as the current room's main address. Think that matters?
Lots are on different servers, and I think you can only create an address on your own server… Think they even do anything? Or if someone on one of those servers sees it and goes to the old room hopefully they'll follow the two upgraded room links? | 13:56:18 |
u | Also was browsing /pol/ and saw an interesting link on what programming languages to learn: | 14:01:03 |

u | * It was stable when I installed mx. I think it should have another 2yrs or so of support? (LTS to June 30th, 2024). As long as it still works, repos still up, firefox & element gets updates, I don't see a need to go through the 50 steps or so to customize a new install. Maybe an in-place upgrade someday... | 14:07:34 |
FF777 | i don't know tons about how the addressse work.. i guess just do test searches and make sure your rooms are still showing up or what ever.. | 17:49:49 |
FF777 | i was kind of teasing you about not having the current debian.... i hate having to do reinstall so i've been putting it off for a longass time.... i'm still on stretch and things slowly have broken over time... like my firefox 52 doesn't even work for a lot of websites now (so i have brave installed too).. but recently the entire stretch repo has just been dropped...... meaning i can't even install any thing from it any more..... they probably dropped it because bookworm is about to release.. so i think i will be forced to install bookworm.....
...however... if you want a life pro-tip: i try not to install .0 versions of some thing..... i wait for the first bug release.. a good recent example: godot (a popular open-source game engine) recently released version 4.0.0 but i waited until 4.0.1 to update to it..... guess what..... 4.0.0 had a huge bug that could possibly delete your entire user home directory.... ouch..... so, once bookworm releases i will wait until the first update package releases for it before i install it.. and i'll probably upgrade my APU from a 4-core one to an 8-core one when i do that too.. | 17:54:41 |

u | Version numbers are practically meaningless for those like Firefox, they used to be on 2.something for years, now every month a new whole number, they might as well just use dates like Ubuntu. I think they just wanted to keep up with chrome’s “higher number = better” for the npc’s. And updating apps has become a religion... that NYC repair guy (Louis rossman?) is probably right that most updates just break things and will cost you money | 06:00:58 |
FF777 | yeah i remember using firefox back when it was version 2 and 3 or what ever long time ago.. | 06:03:06 |
FF777 | then they copied how chrome updates i guess | 06:04:14 |
u | iPhones don’t even allow a rollback of version (without jail breaking), and some eufy security cameras (kind of important “just work right now”) could force an app update instead of showing a live crime in your yard. But the cameras themselves force auto update too, which breaks the old app... their whole system won’t even work without internet access anyway, despite being all on a local network - modern conveniences | 06:05:29 |
FF777 | i don't even have a cell-phone because i hate them so much.. | 06:07:14 |
u | Anyway... just read that Debian 8,9,10 could still be supported with some companies ELTS, but looks like it’ll cost at least 250€ a year, maybe even tens of thousands... their pricing pages have several options. Debian’s website made it sound like their customers pay but anyone could use them, I don’t think so though. | 06:09:56 |
FF777 | yeah but..... the repo isn't even there any more for stretch | 06:10:43 |

u | In reply to @ff777:nerdsin.space then they copied how chrome updates i guess Weird but I didn’t even see your replies at the time, not until now after clearing the cache are they visible. And we’re both on the same server too... if I don’t clear cache every 5-10 minutes things go funny | 05:56:53 |
FF777 | that's weird.... but i'm using some old client (riot) | 06:06:35 |
u | I’ve got an older element, we’re both missing out on polls and probably threads (they sound annoying) | 06:24:02 |
FF777 | threads are fucking retarded.. | 06:24:21 |
FF777 | they just wanted to copy discord with out thinking on if it is actually a good idea or not.. | 06:25:01 |
u | Never tried discord, I know they haven’t a clue what “server” really means. If they wanted a phone # that’s a no-go, like twitter iirc (almost signed up after musk 💸) | 06:29:19 |
u | Maybe time to upgrade... I’ve been running live ISO’s for years as a main os, only have to remember to save wanted files to a drive. The good part is even getting “infected” or a corrupted browser profile is all reset on reboot. Can remove libc & X just for fun | 06:30:07 |
u | Had a script to copy over home config files & browser profile, and everything’s set | 06:31:40 |
FF777 | i make full drive back-up images about once every month or two.. | 06:31:52 |
FF777 | discord was neat at first, but then it just got slowly worse and worse and they kept shilling nitro more and putting any new features behind that (meaning you have to pay money)..... and yeah they want phone number | 06:33:22 |
u | There’s a Brazilian guy on here, against censorship or something, who keeps posting 1000 word essays about how Brazil is being taken over by totalitarian fascist nazi communists (🤨) who’s on discord I think. Must attract the slightly less technical 🥜, maybe gamer groomers & onlyfans too, not too sure | 06:38:18 |
