Let me pick one example.
Consider the cmd instance.

QString* cmd
So the member is a pointer to cmd. It points to a QString. But it is not itself a QString, it is a pointer to QString.

While your member function getCmd says it returns a QString, not a pointer to QString.

Now, there are two(or three) possibilities:
1. You wanted to return a pointer to QString (not ideal, as you need to somehow guarantee it's lifetime)
2. You wanted to return a copy of the QString (ok, but then you are copying the object, so make sure you want that)
3. You wanted to return a reference to the QString (similar to pointer, lifetime concerns apply)
looks to me that making an example using QString pointers can only make more confusion: as someone already said all QWidgets inherit from QObject class, which destroy all its children and usually QWidgets are passed as non const pointers, while QString as const reference and in rare cases you want a pointer to a string. QString does not inherit from QObject

I should've selected a better example there. At that point I was trying to explain the differences between pointer, reference and the instance tbh. Having it mixed with Qt objects didn't help

The file name is kwin_taskbar6, thus I presume it's kwin, not labwc
