@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | Hey, does anybody have recommendations for studying for a PPL exam? I'm probably going to solo (in a glider) some time this spring and my instructors have suggested studying for the exam as a way to prepare | 14:12:33 |
@brad:koehn.com | In reply to @kb1rd:kb1rd.net Hey, does anybody have recommendations for studying for a PPL exam? I'm probably going to solo (in a glider) some time this spring and my instructors have suggested studying for the exam as a way to prepare I have my ASEL/Instrument Airplane. I recommend using online tests (a quick search found this one; it may or may not be worthwhile: https://www.4tests.com/private-pilot-glider-exam). There are apps available for mobile devices as well. One important thing to remember: when you don't know the answer (or why that's the answer), look it up or ask a CFI (or askacfi.com).
Passing the test is meant as a proxy for making sure you know how to stay safe; only you can make sure you know how to apply all that information to actually keep you safe.

Aaron | and I assume you’ve also seen https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/test_questions/media/PGLSampleExam.pdf | 14:20:18 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | Yeah. For exactly that reason my instructors recommended a ground course that would actually explain why rather than just have me memorize answers | 14:20:56 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | So I've avoided practice tests rn | 14:21:17 |
Aaron | I’m not sure how much powered stuff carries over to glider. I enjoyed going through the Sporty’s Learn to Fly course but I got got that for free. I’m not sure I would recommend that for $250 since it doesn’t have any glider stuff. | 14:21:29 |
@brad:koehn.com | I did my ASEL ground school online; it was ok, but not having anyone to talk to made it harder. | 14:21:51 |
@brad:koehn.com | Consider joining CAP. If you're under 18 flight instruction is basically free, and if you're over 18 you get half off anything from King Schools. | 14:23:04 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | CAP? | 14:27:06 |
Aaron | Civil Air Patrol | 14:27:24 |
@brad:koehn.com | https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/ | 14:27:35 |
Aaron | and of course, read the FAA glider flying handbook | 14:31:21 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | done ;) | 14:31:54 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | my instructors also recommended reading parts of the FAA pilot handbook and I also have a pre-solo glider basics book | 14:33:57 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | it's just been a while and I should review | 14:34:16 |
Aaron | Yeah PHAK is also going to be useful | 14:35:31 |

@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | https://www.wcvb.com/article/small-plane-crashes-into-wooded-area-in-sterling/31405010 that's at the airport where I usually fly | 22:16:24 |
@brad:koehn.com | Sorry, man; that's really hard. Loss of thrust on takeoff is something we powered pilots need to be prepared for. | 22:23:12 |
Aaron | Is there any more information on how bad the injuries were? | 22:25:37 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | none yet that I can find | 22:25:45 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | that's why I linked the news report with a video | 22:26:00 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | I was trying to see what could've happened, but I'll just wait for more details to come out rather than speculate | 22:27:23 |
Aaron | Just looking at Google Maps it looks like there are lots of trees around the airport | 22:28:13 |
Aaron | Do you have a sense of where the plane is in relation to the airport? | 22:28:48 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | Yeah. The area off that end of the runway is swampy, but it has enough trees in it that I wouldn't want to land there | 22:28:53 |
@kb1rd:kb1rd.net | I thought I read that it stalled after takeoff, so probably right of the end | 22:29:45 |
Aaron | Oh yeah the first few frames of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnhFalClHtg show where it is | 22:37:35 |
