@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratI just imagined something to put on a secret club sign or whatever14:58:45
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratOr maybe a motto of sorts14:58:50
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratI still can't figure out the word for “be able to” though15:05:02
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartrat“Kaua e nau mai māna e kupu koe i te reo” is the best I could do; “Don't come here unless you speak Māori”15:33:20
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratBit rough, I know xD15:33:26
@swansinflight:mtrx.nzswansinflightoh noes I am out then 👀20:49:28
@swansinflight:mtrx.nzswansinflightif there was interest, I imagine the admin would throw up a Māori channel20:50:31
@swansinflight:mtrx.nzswansinflightI mean i dont mind it here, was just an idea20:50:45

ka taea e <actor> te <patient> te <verb>
04:29:20
@josh:matrix.voorka.mpjoshthe e <actor>, te <patient> and te <verb> can be moved around to create different emphasis though (I believe the thing that goes last is the thing that is emphasised, and rule of thumb is that pronouns are as early in the sentence as possible)04:30:12

Yeah, usually VSO

@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartrat“Kaua e nau mai māna e ka taea e koe te reo te kupu” or something like that?13:02:21
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratGoogle Translate says: “Kaua e haere/nau mai ki konei ki te kore koe e mohio ki te korero Māori”15:00:27
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratIt definitely got “kaua e haere mai” right, that definitely means “don't come here”; not sure about the rest of it though15:00:54
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartrat* It definitely got “kaua e haere mai (ki konei)” right, that definitely means “don't come here”; not sure about the rest of it though15:01:34
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratIt's interesting how it used a negator as in “if you can't speak Māori” instead of a concessive as in “unless you can speak Māori”15:03:18
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratAnd it used “to know”, which is more accurate15:04:20
@xurizaemon:matrix.orgxurizaemonIt seems an odd / interesting sentiment to express using Google Translate? It's not a vibe I've come across in "te reo Maorí welcome here" spaces. If you are excited to learn, I highly recommend doing so in person if possible, as that allows space for tikanga as well as reo. (If you have that already, great, and sorry for any wrong assumptions!)19:06:28
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartrat Pity that I'm not in or from NZ 19:34:08
@tartratartrat:gemeinsam.jetztTartratAnd I was thinking of a “secret club” kinda thing xD I hardly think NZers have that, let alone Māori people19:35:12
@void:mtrx.nzBlue Eyes White Womanthere are really good classes that take place over zoom/other video call apparatus, that you could try if you're excited to learn!19:41:42
@snow:possum.lolsnowYeah, I wouldn't rely on Goog translate personally, it likely has some interesting quirks that aren't "Accurate"19:41:57
@snow:possum.lolsnow But as Blue Eyes White Woman just said, those kinds of groups will take you so far 19:42:06

I don't, I used it as a one-off
