@sirlurksalot:jupiterbroadcasting.comSirLurksalot chrislas I forget which show. But recently I heard you lamenting all the hardware issues you've had to deal with for JB infrastructure. And I forget exactly what you said. But in a nutshell, you owned that a big contributing factor has been your own lack of proper infrastructure management. I think you have show material here. Especially for Self Hosted, when it comes to specific infrastructure pieces. Perhaps there is a lessons learned angle here. "Don't be like us! Learn from our mistakes." You can talk about the kinds of pickles you find yourself in, e.g. multiple failing hard disks. You have the drama of trying to get out of your pickles, and a story-ride to take your listeners on. You can do your post-mortems on how and why things broke down. And the lessons learned you present teach or at least dramatize and emphasize the importance of all these infrastructure management peices. Because that is a part of our reality, managing IT infrastructure. Whether at scale, a small business, or at home. And lots of people home-lab to learn. Well, they should also be learning practical things like how to implement proper backup solutions, How to manage the life-cycles of equipment. How to properly manage sparing. And tricks like staggering disk purchases and upgrades so that all the disks in an array are not all of the same age and make, making them likely to fail at roughly the same time when kept in the same environment and subjected to the same workload. You can make business continuty and disaster recovery related content as you tackle getting your own infrastructure in order, and I think you get the idea. You already tend to use your personal techsploits as content already. So it seems like it is within JB's style. It gives a theme that many episodes can attach to. And you can draw from the audience for their experiences, solutions, and (of course) their dramatic stories for more content. Food for thought. 🍻 09:19:40

And lots of people home-lab to learn. Well, they should also be learning practical things like how to implement proper backup solutions. How to manage the life-cycles of equipment, and to budget for turnover. How to properly manage sparing. And tricks like staggering disk purchases and upgrades so that all the disks in an array are not all of the same age and model, making them likely to fail at roughly the same time when kept in the same environment and subjected to the same workload. @sirlurksalot:jupiterbroadcasting.comSirLurksalot What I'm saying is that if you understand that managing your infrastructure is something you need to spend time on, then do what you do best! Turn that time into show content. You'll do yourself, JB, and your audience a favor in the end. At least in my humble opinion. Be well chrislas ! 09:28:41
@sirlurksalot:jupiterbroadcasting.comSirLurksalot Don't just Self Host. Self Host like a professional! 09:30:54
@chrislas:jupiterbroadcasting.comchrislas Hah yeah there are def times where some of the infrastructure work can be converted into content, and then there’s other times where it’s just grueling grind stuff 15:14:48
