Macer | kind of regretting updating now that i have this swap issue heh | 23:36:05 |
Macer | well.. encrypted swap. i guess i could always just change the partition tag and not encrypt it. i mean encrypting swap is next level paranoid but still.. it should just work (tm) | 23:36:33 |

Dyutikrushna Dhal | hi, I am using Ubuntu 22.04
I created a dual boot (windows / Ubuntu), but I am facing random freeze especially while using chrome browser. till now I am unable to get the reason that affects freeze, still I have tried to increase the virtual swap memory upto 10GB thinking it might happen due to low memory (my laptop has 8GB ram ) . can any one help me with this? | 05:25:47 |
ashugg | Hello, are your freezes temporary - as in, does the system recover and keep working again? Or does it lock up hard and need a power reset? | 05:56:02 |
ashugg | I can say that I have an older computer that also has only 8 GB RAM, and I will get hard lock-ups requiring a power cycle if I load a YouTube or Twitch livestream in my browser. (It can cope with playing normal YouTube videos though, I think.) | 05:57:56 |
Dyutikrushna Dhal | no it freezes permanently till I do a hard reset with the power button. the very next boot it works fine.
is 8 GB RAM not enough ? can't this get fixed?

nteodosio | Dyutikrushna Dhal: You could write a script to append ps aux --sort -rss|head to a file every 10 s or so, so when it happens again you can check in that log file what was the memory hog after rebooting. | 10:48:25 |
nteodosio | I'd be surprised if the OOM killer wouldn't log this already, but if the system is hanging then the OOM killer didn't kick in yet I must assumer. | 10:49:11 |
nteodosio | Also there is Sysrq+f to invoke call the OOM killer, too bad it is disabled by default but you can enable it if you are the administrator of the system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key | 10:50:51 |
