The app hit 100 million monthly users in the USA, a country where it is desperately trying to grow.
For context, WhatsApp has more than 2 billion users around the world.

@bkil:matrix.orgbkilDoes this prove that it is primarily a surveillance tool aimed at spying on non-US citizens, while domestic uptake is seen only as collateral damage?11:25:09
@johanw:matrix.orgjohanwWhatsapp is encrypted so the only thing the US can spy on with it is metadata. US citizens seem to contain the only large group still using sms for chat so spying on them is much easier.11:36:13
@bkil:matrix.orgbkilThat, and backdoors in its proprietary code.11:37:33
@aranjedeath:explodie.orgaranjedeath ๐ŸŠGoogle has mostly "fixed" this SMS usage with RCS in messages app, but google still routes all the texts so it's certainly easily surveiled14:03:24
@aranjedeath:explodie.orgaranjedeath ๐ŸŠand RCS is not some super secure thing, just substantially better than plaintext sms 14:04:06
@aranjedeath:explodie.orgaranjedeath ๐ŸŠ * and RCS is not some super secure+private thing, just substantially better than plaintext sms 14:04:23
@johanw:matrix.orgjohanwGoogle added proprietary e2e encryption on RCS so it only works if both sides use Google Messenger, and then removed it so it's AI could do dumb things like autoreply.14:11:58
@johanw:matrix.orgjohanwIt's still encrypted to the server so only Google (and the US government) can read it.14:12:44
@aranjedeath:explodie.orgaranjedeath ๐ŸŠYes, correct, they used privileged market position to resolve the refusal of cell companies to deploy RCS, and reduced the number of parties reading the texts. Not "good", just better than the previous terrible no good situation14:30:33
@johanw:matrix.orgjohanwBut still far worse than Whatsapp. And I use sms almost only for 2fa and messages from companies (your car needs a checkup, your cat needs a vaccination, you have a dentist appointment), that stuff. No one here uses sms for chat, also because there are a.lot of.prepaid users where sms costs money per message.14:50:31
@bkil:matrix.orgbkilWow, I never thought of messaging my cat before, although I know pigs and dogs can be thought a lot of tricks. But then again, this comments appears to have come from a cat, so I'd need to reconsider. Sorry, bad joke. ๐Ÿคก14:54:13

Cats can also be taught tricks.

@cat:feline.supportCatCats are just not as motivated as Dogs usually.14:55:08
@cat:feline.supportCatDogs have the whole live to please personality trait but your Cat is happy to learn if your feline friend sees a reason to. 14:55:41
