etbe | I'm running Matrix on Buster (from Backports), when installing it said that sqlite would give less performance, but expecting only a few users using the server at any time I didn't anticipate problems. The server is taking ages to join large channels (freenode IRC channels bridged through matrix.org), is this usual and would using a storage method other than sqlite improve things? | 09:41:36 |
Paul 👨💻 | I guess it is more "a few users on a server talking to each other" I would say | 09:48:33 |
Paul 👨💻 | if you federate a lot because you join large channels it might improve | 09:49:01 |
Paul 👨💻 | (although even I had to forego/leave a few big channels because the memory usage is so high, keeping the server swapping...) | 09:49:31 |

etbe | After I started running Matrix I noticed the system swap use increased. I just increased the RAM for the VM and it wasn't a big deal, it now has 10G of RAM for a fairly idle list server, a fairly idle Wordpress setup, and a Matrix server that has about 4 accounts in total. | 09:52:32 |
Paul 👨💻 | Oh, sounds quite beefy, unfortunately my VPS only has 1,5GB available yet | 09:54:29 |
Paul 👨💻 | I also hope the next generation servers (Dendrite/Construct/Conduit/etc.) solve a big chunk of the resource issues nonetheless | 09:55:17 |
etbe | Yes, the server was a second-hand server at a hosting company, the previous user had paid for 48G of RAM and we got it for the same price as a regular 16G system. | 09:56:16 |
Paul 👨💻 | But I noticed that the large bridged channels bring lots more events to handle | 09:56:28 |
Paul 👨💻 | Netsplits etc., and on IRC also usually more people come and go | 09:57:03 |
etbe | How hard is it to migrate between Matrix servers? Will we have other Matrix servers in Bullseye? | 09:57:01 |
etbe | Also is Matrix expected to work well on Unstable? I'm thinking of upgrading my Matrix server to Unstable well before the freeze so I can test everything out. | 09:59:15 |
Paul 👨💻 | There are thoughts about "portable accounts" but it has not been specified and implemented at all yet | 10:01:09 |
