Andrew | It makes sense for Syncthing because there is not much to announce that isn't handled well by Discourse. The only fundamental issue I see is that email is an antiquated mechanism, but as you mention, there is the RSS feed for connecting to other platforms. | 13:07:11 |
Sergi Tsanz | I just thought about it in the sense of being able to promote themselves in a social media | 13:07:45 |
Emanuele Aliberti | Andrew have you heard any news about the development of the integration of Discourse with Matrix? I had read their comment, but then I did not have time to follow the development of that sub-project. | 13:08:14 |
Andrew | In reply to @sergitsanz:tsztrix.ems.host I just thought about it in the sense of being able to promote themselves in a social media Fortunately that can be done even more effectively by individuals posting about how they like Syncthing so the advertising is grassroots. | 13:09:05 |

Andrew | In reply to @ealiberti:matrix.org Andrew have you heard any news about the development of the integration of Discourse with Matrix? I had read their comment, but then I did not have time to follow the development of that sub-project. Coincidentally yesterday I was starting to install the official chat plugin to experiment with it | 13:12:01 |

Sergi Tsanz | syncinh the documents folder across all my devices is pretty neat 😏 | 09:44:22 |
Sergi Tsanz | who needs a cloud storage now? | 09:44:38 |
skullone | yeah, it's pretty sweet | 09:52:45 |
skullone | still handy to have a file server around always on, I've had conflicts from my phone being too low on battery to sync or my laptop not turned on and they both modified my KeepAss database, which wouldn't have been a problem if they'd sync'd to another device | 09:54:38 |
skullone | but if you're technical enough to set up syncthing you can probably run a microserver, rPI or some other microcomputer as a NAS | 09:55:37 |
Emanuele Aliberti | Or a cheap VPS. | 09:56:44 |
Sergi Tsanz | yeah 🤘🤘 | 10:33:21 |

Sergi Tsanz | could a local NAS replace syncthing? | 10:04:20 |
Sergi Tsanz | I always thought if I could have a local server to sync across all my devices at home it would be coool... | 10:05:03 |
Sergi Tsanz | also a copy of what is in the computers would be in the local NAS | 10:05:24 |
Andrew | A local NAS serves a different purpose than Syncthing. The combination of the two is useful, because then you have a "persistent peer" with lots of storage capacity. This assumes that your NAS is basically a server that you can install Syncthing on. | 13:26:54 |
Andrew | The benefits of having a Syncthing peer with lots of storage always online are that (1) you can use the NAS as a "receive-only" peer that ensures access to data between devices that are not always simultaneously online, and (2) the large storage capacity allows you to take advantage of features like Syncthing file versioning, which can help with conflict resolution for example. | 13:30:58 |
