@lukaro:hacknesium.delukaroI disagree, I have yet to see a single JS App that feels as fast as native code. But of course, it's possible that even native code feels sluggish and slow :)06:45:30
@cadence:cadence.moecadence It does also depend on which native code in particular you're talking about. In my experience, Visual Studio (native) and Visual Studio Code (electron) have quite similar performance characteristics, especially for the core gameplay loop of typing text, looking up function definitions, and running things in the console. Microsoft Teams is also electron and also accepts text to be typed as its primary function, but it is an objective disaster where text focus is unpredictable and every single click or function takes a second to load. 07:33:11
@cadence:cadence.moecadence DrRacket uses the native gui toolkit (powered by Wx) and almost works fantastically, but some settings panes have very strange scrolling characteristics. It also consumes a decent chunk of RAM. 07:34:06
@zrw:psi.one@zrw:psi.oneDoes Bibliogram still work when selfhosted? 🤔10:52:42

You can check the code if not, or run it in vm or lxc and monitor it that way (if you aren't familiar with reading nodejs)

@jordanplayz158:matrix.orgjordanplayz158Fosscord might be a good balance, it is suppose to be compatible with discord but the server and client will be open source and when using a fosscord server, you know discord won't be tracking you, might be easier of a switch19:29:39
@cadence:cadence.moecadence ^ probably overblown, I tend to be cautious of projects that are "just" clones of other services. 20:41:02

Under the hood is important, many JS apps I know run a full on browser, electron which is, quite heavy, if you made an app in pure nodejs, might not be as heavy, although don't code in nodejs much nor make desktop apps in it
20:54:24
@cadence:cadence.moecadenceTrue! JavaScript is a very fast language on its own (when used with appropriate algorithms). Adding a browser does complicate things, but it is still possible to have a convenient and responsive user interface.20:57:11

Yeah, admittedly, I am only doing the bare minimum, as in just keeping it working and fixing it if something breaks (if it gets reported, admittedly, I don't really use nor have instagram)

@cadence:cadence.moecadencehaha I'm not suspicious of you, I'm suspicious of fosscord21:32:01

@jbm.1210:envs.netJohn B.Welp, I might be making the compromise. Gonna create a Snapchat for some current friends and friends in the future I guess. As much as I don’t like it.21:03:36

@lukaro:hacknesium.delukaroBut fosscord still is a new platform, I'd still prefer switching directly to Matrix then. I don't' see any benefits staying with something like discord, as Element has the same features as discord, but better :D18:47:24
@lukaro:hacknesium.delukaroYeah, I was just talking about modern gui applications, e.g. those matrix clients. My XMPP client prosody works flawlessly even on old laptops, but there's no way I could use a matrix client on my old laptop.18:48:48
