Manav#8403 | Some (uplifting) news about news. There was a time when it seemed that old school newspapers were done for, but it seems that at least some of them have managed to figure out digital sustainability. | 01:01:01 |
Manav#8403 | This graphic is a bit misleading because it doesn’t adjust for inflation. So their revenues haven’t gone up, but the trend is going up. Inflation adjusted, their revenues are around the 2008 mark, and going up. | 01:02:36 |

Manav#8403 | Found an interesting comment around this in the reddit post where I got this graphic from. Don't remember the exact line, but it was something like Newspapers have centuries of experience in separating their sales room from their news room (as in, not letting their advertising impact their journalistic integrity in the era of print media); but they are right now struggling to separate their newsroom from their readers (as in, in the social media era, the journalists are perhaps too close to their audience) | 03:21:24 |
Manav | In reply to @desktop-ebook-defiling:matrix.org Nvm that's the wa post Right, I think that was WP | 03:22:04 |
PoeticFever27943578 | I would guess they'd start investing in getting people to subscribe, whatever that entails | 03:39:46 |
Manav | In reply to @desktop-ebook-defiling:matrix.org I would guess they'd start investing in getting people to subscribe, whatever that entails Indeed. I'm not defending subscription models. I don't know what's the best way to ensure independent journalism. But I'm just happy that they're surviving still. I don't think social media "journalism" should fully replace big banner journalism. | 03:43:52 |
Manav | I also have a soft corner for NY Times because they have open sourced many of the tools that they use for data analysis and visualization. They actually hired Mike Bostok. | 03:44:58 |
