jamniczek | I'm looking for some nice time-killing RPG. I hear Divinity Original Sin 2 is pretty great, but I was never a super fan of Baldur's Gate-like games. I did love Disco Elysium though, so I'm thinking I'd give it a try. Too bad there's no demo available. | 08:31:39 |
jamniczek | I did find out about Octopath Traveller and played the demo for a bit and I quite enjoyed it. Perhaps I'd give it a try too, although I'm not a huge fan of jRPGy games. Maybe there's something else you'd recommend? | 08:32:35 |
slimerancher | RPG but not a JRPG, and not a CRPG. | 09:15:03 |
slimerancher | Skyrim and Witcher 3 come to mind. Will have to look up what other RPGs that are not JRPG or CRPG there. | 09:15:27 |
slimerancher | Xenoblade Chronicles games are my favourite, but they are JRPG. Same for Atelier Ryza games. | 09:16:11 |
slimerancher | Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen | 10:23:45 |

Hook | In reply to @jamniczek:matrix.orgAction or turn based? | 19:37:31 |
jamniczek | In reply to @silverhook:matrix.orgYes :) | 19:40:20 |
Hook | The Xenoblade series is really long, and amazing if you can get behind that. | 19:55:02 |
Hook | It is a bit specific though and (at least for 2) I recommend watching some online tutorials on the complex combat. | 19:56:17 |
Hook | Some really good Zelda-likes: • Darksiders 1 & 2 – the edgier cousin of Zelda & God of War (3 has some Dark Souls elements, Genesis is much more Diablo-like, even better in co-op) • Baldo – awesome, Ghibli-esque, but much tougher combat; great dungeons (it received massive patches since release, so disregard early reviews) • Tunic – similar, but with an added twist where you unravel the language of your in-game tutorial as you play – haven’t played it yet • Oceanhorn 2 – (the first one is very Zelda-like) seems to have grown its own personallity and is apparently really good – I haven’t tried it yet | 20:02:57 |
Hook | I just finished Nier: Automata, and it’s definitely a trip you should go in as blind as possible. | 20:03:26 |
Hook | Some very action-heavy ones: • Astral Chain – some pretty nice detective work, and a unique combat. • Daemon X Machina – mechs! • the Ys series – basically to action (J)RPGs what Dragon Quest is to turn-based ones | 20:07:03 |
Hook | Some very action-heavy ones: • Astral Chain – some pretty nice detective work, and a unique combat. • Daemon X Machina – mechs! • the Ys series – basically to action (J)RPGs what Dragon Quest is to turn-based ones • Sonic Frontiers – “Sonic: Breath of the Wild” | 20:07:16 |
Hook | With Dark Souls elements: • Ashen – I love this one! Amazing atmosphere • Windbound – I also love this one! It features quite realistic sailing, but is proceduraly generated and has (optional) permadeath; so don’t go there if you’re not into that • Dragon’s Dogma – japanese, but is much more like a western action RPG, has boss-climbing features | 20:10:14 |
Hook | Kingdoms of Amalur – I haven’t tried it yet, but I hear it’s a great MMORPG-like | 20:10:59 |
Hook | CrossCode – an absolute gem, really good .hack//-like story, amazing pixel art, music and combat, good puzzzles too | 20:12:57 |
Hook | Snack World – easy to pick up and play, not very deep, but fun and quirky | 20:14:08 |
Hook | If you want a bigger emphasis on a certain culture: • Raji – Indian mythology • Sakuna of Rice and Ruin – Japanese, includes tending a rice paddy • Jotun – Norse, amazing artwork • Yaga – Slavic, unique soundtrack (rogue-like) | 20:17:33 |
Hook | On that topic, if you’re not afraid of rogue-like elements: • Yaga • Snack World • Windbound • Children of Morta • Hades • This War of Mine | 20:18:39 |
Hook | When it comes to turn-based, the easy recmmendations are of course: • Dragon Quest XI – the grand-daddy of turn-based JRPGs • Sea of Stars – what you remember CronoCross etc. were like, no filler • Labyrinth of Refrain series – great, somewhat crazy, 1st person dungeon crawlers • Operencia: The Stolen Sun – same, but less crazy, and with more deep puzzles • Bravely Default 2 – deep job system, great story, love it or hate it artstyle (has the battle system that Octopath borrowed from it) • Battle Chasers – similar battle system as BD2, by same devs as Darksiders, so a more edgy, dark comic-book style • Valkyria Chronicles series – a unique blend of top-down turn-based and over-the-shoulder action tactics RPG | 20:24:51 |
Hook | Even more emphasis on tactis: • Wargroove (series) • Mario & Rabbids series • Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs – I really like the humour in this one TBH, some might not • Banner of the Maid – em, Napoleon waifu magic boobs, heavy strategy | 20:26:33 |
Hook | Some weird ones: • West of Loathing – apparently really great game, not to be judged by its screenshots • Warlock of the Firetop Mountain – great re-creation of a choose your own adventure book (i.e. proto-RPG) | 20:28:19 |
Hook | Honorable mentions: Child of Light, Inscryption, Griftlands, Cosmicstar Heroine, Cthulhu Stole Christmas, CristTales, Voice of Cards series, Fuga series, Ni No Kuni series, In Other Waters (really weird, maybe more adventure) | 20:29:37 |
Hook | I hope that helps :) | 20:29:47 |

slimerancher | In reply to @silverhook:matrix.orgYeah, if looking up Baldo, ignore the performance issues, they have been pretty much all fixed now. | 11:15:31 |
