@namurphy:matrix.org | Awesome! | 21:07:20 |
Ben Alterman | dstansby: Would you like me to include you as well? | 21:07:56 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | yes please! | 21:08:01 |
@namurphy:matrix.org | Feel free to link him to this room and the PyHC matrix room too; I'm better at discussing things here | 21:09:07 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | In reply to @namurphy:matrix.org One of the things we're planning on doing soon-ish for PlasmaPy is implementing a dispersion relation solver. That would depend on distribution function data structures. Yay maybe my dispersion solver API can be revived! | 21:09:36 |
Ben Alterman | dstansby: Where are you these days? MSSL? | 21:10:06 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | Yep, as of Monday | 21:10:40 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | Am I right in thinking you've moved too? | 21:10:52 |
@namurphy:matrix.org | I've been thinking a lot about software architecture, though most of my work has been in simulations with the fluid approximation (huzzah for the chromosphere!) so I need to learn more about use cases for in situ data, etc. | 21:10:54 |
Cadair | nice | 21:10:55 |
@namurphy:matrix.org | And congratulations, dstansby! | 21:11:04 |
Cadair | I haven't vistied MSSL in years... | 21:11:09 |
Cadair | it's a really nice place | 21:11:32 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | do you keep getting lost trying to find it? | 21:11:33 |
Cadair | haha | 21:11:38 |
Cadair | yeah | 21:11:39 |
Ben Alterman | Not yet. January. | 21:11:51 |
Ben Alterman | In reply to @namurphy:matrix.org One of the things we're planning on doing soon-ish for PlasmaPy is implementing a dispersion relation solver. That would depend on distribution function data structures. Before you write anything yourself, contact Kris Klein at Arizona and Daniel Verscharen. | 21:14:37 |
Ben Alterman | They've got very robust and well accepted dispersion codes. | 21:14:48 |
Ben Alterman | I know that Daniel's NHDS (Fortran) is on GH. | 21:15:00 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | I wrote a python wrapper for it | 21:15:34 |
Ben Alterman | I've also used Kris' Fortran code. Very robust and the inputs are manageable. At the least, they're superb contacts for this stuff. | 21:15:37 |
Ben Alterman | dstansby: NHDS? | 21:15:43 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | yeah | 21:15:46 |
@dstansby:matrix.org | NHDSPy | 21:15:51 |
Ben Alterman | Nick Murphy: What are the URLs for the matrix channels I should include in the e-mail? | 21:17:05 |
@namurphy:matrix.org | I've talked with Kris a while back and have taken a look at NHDS. Including Fortran makes packaging more difficult and reduces maintainability, so we would not be including those directly. Tulasi has been the person planning on doing this, and he's in more contact with them than I have been. | 21:17:39 |
Ben Alterman | I wasnt suggesting including Fortran in the package. | 21:18:02 |
@namurphy:matrix.org | Let's see if this works: https://riot.im/app/#/room/#heliopy:matrix.org and https://riot.im/app/#/room/#heliopython:openastronomy.org | 21:18:10 |
Ben Alterman | But they could provide test cases, other known values, etc. | 21:18:13 |
