Maybe of interest for some of you, Matthias Troyer (Head of Quantum @ Microsoft), on actually reasonable applications for QC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybmKJBTXudk&ab_channel=MicrosoftAzure
The consensus really does seem to be shifting more and more to "quadratic speedup is not good enough"

@tmonz:matrix.orgtmonzIt's also about bot hiding the little details that can kill your advantage. Such as how swiftly you can actually move data into a QC19:21:59

This is interesting because I thought that superconducting machines were smaller than this

@tmonz:matrix.orgtmonzAre you going by the pictures from IBM? Note that there is a false wall behind the 'hanging barrel', with all the eletronics etc stored behind that wall. 21:25:15
@tmonz:matrix.orgtmonzThe electronics is actually similar: most of the modulation is done (typically) with RF in the about 200 MHz area, which is then mixed onto a carrier that is close to the resonance of the respective qubits. For SC systems it GHz, while for ions is in the optical domain. 21:33:09
@tmonz:matrix.orgtmonzNewer laser systems are rack-mountable, including the respective references. As such, it's not much different compared to the GHz sources you mount into the 19'' rack.21:33:45

Not just IBM but yeah, just my sense from pictures

I love it! I know how tiny studio apartment showers are so I'm impressed.
03:24:33
@michelle:privacytools.io@michelleAt one time mainframe computers had entire buildings dedicated to them but they were getting more powerful. I love to see this, which looks more like the minicomputer phase that followed those huge early mainframes. 03:25:17
@michelle:privacytools.io@michelleNot yet microcomputer or PC but still great progress. Those early 1960's-ish models still had proprietary operating systems and a different architecture every time a new model came out but it was progress, and they started to standardize enough to pave the way for C compilers (and UNIX) that would come next and revolutionize software develoment.03:28:08
@michelle:privacytools.io@michelleThat's where I think we are in the development timeline but I'm sure the analogy falls flat in some areas too.03:28:40

OH IN THE *SHOWER*??
15:41:42
@1ethanhansen:matrix.org1ethanhansenI totally just skipped that word the first time I read it lolololol15:42:01
@1ethanhansen:matrix.org1ethanhansenI thought it was just smaller than a studio apartment hence my confusion 😆15:42:27
@michelle:privacytools.io@michelleMaybe the size of a studio apt in San Fransicso is about that same size 😂🤣15:43:08
