Regarding travel to Canada, you are there for meetings with colleagues. If you say you are there for 'work' border patrol will want to see the appropriate work visa. When I had to visit colleagues and customers in Canada, the directing manager of our Canada subsidiary would provide me a letter of introduction in the case I was stopped at the border. The Canadians are surprisingly strict about who can come to their country to work
It's the exact same thing from Canada to the US. I once accidentally said I'm going for "work" which involved a lot of back-peddling. And another time we had to do the same thing providing a letter to the border guard, but the border guard said it means nothing to him and wanted to hear me explain it in my own words, he then yelled at me for about a solid 10 minutes, and when he eventually realized he was in the wrong he let me go. It was fun.

Had a friend from Botswana cross into Canada without an updated visa and she had no real issues. They then wanted me to empty my car for inspection. The BP agent then looked at my car and said, "Never mind." We were going home from college that year and the car was packed.

@richardjacton:matrix.orgrichardjactonIt would be much better if the US passed comprehensive federal privacy laws before they broke up google, heck if they'd done that it might not have got to the point where google needed to be broken up - but at this point they should definitely break up google even if they make a mess doing it.16:44:13
@kpovoc:beeper.comkpovocI posted this in Mike’s GamerRadio Discord, but thought I might should copy over here in case it was of use to the Coder audience. I’ve been doing web dev with WSL, NodeJS, WebStorm, Docker, and MicroK8s for a little over a year now at work. AMA. 😁 Biggest issues we’ve hit: - Docker installed in WSL, and Docker Desktop installed in Windows at the same time gets a bit wonky. We solved it by installing only in WSL - In order to use `localhost` from a browser in Windows to something hosted in the WSL installed MicroK8s, we’ve had to do some manual port forwarding in an admin powershell. Best we can tell, mirrored networking supposedly fixes this, but it hasn’t worked for us yet. - Every now and again, we get an error about our user not having permissions to run WSL. I think this is more of an issue with how our IT has setup accounts, than a problem with WSL itself. Can be fixed by running `Restart-Service vmcompute` in an admin Powershell.16:49:43
@kpovoc:beeper.comkpovocI don’t think the port forwarding bit is needed for localhost with docker compose from within WSL. I think MicroK8s uses its own vnet within the WSL vnet, and doesn’t get forwarded properly.16:51:53
@richardjacton:matrix.orgrichardjactonAlso Yay R! - enjoying that being the official language as it's my primary one. (If anyone wants a little side project it would be pretty simple to turn https://quarto.org/ R's literate programming tool / static site generator into a way to easily whip up a podcasting 2.0 feed by adding a new extra arguments to yaml front matter and have the RSS feed that you can generate for a blog turn into a podcast feed https://github.com/quarto-dev/quarto-cli/discussions/3623)18:03:46
@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroAs someone who uses Windows 11 and WSL2 for work every day for software development.... I have no complaints.20:17:02
@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroIt's awesome to have multiple distros available at my fingertips, including NixOS20:17:23
@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroWhen it comes to Docker, I think the "blessed path" is to use Docker Desktop. But instead of spinning up a Linux VM, it uses WSL as the Linux base to run the containers in.20:18:50
@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroI don't use Docker on a daily basis though.20:19:00
@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroI'm mostly doing .NET 8 development targeting Ubuntu containers on Azure, so I just do my dev/testing in Ubuntu in WSL2.20:19:41
@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroI also do some IaC scripting in Python/Go in the same WSL2 Ubuntu instance.20:20:13

@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroAnyway, just a little feedback on the WSL segment on 58720:22:42

I think Docker Desktop or Docker in WSL are fine either way. Just don’t do both at the same time. And WSL microk8s didn’t play well with Docker Desktop. Which is why we got rid of Desktop and just installed straight into WSL
20:49:48
@micah-dutro:matrix.orgmicah-dutroYeah, I can see that. Depends on what you're doing.20:50:39

@decbot:matrix.orgdecbot @chrislas:jupiterbroadcasting.com: did I hear right and you had ~$100 credit you could use for global entry? You should look at Nexus instead of global entry. It gives you global entry at US and Canada border crossings (air and land crossings) 17:21:36
