That Nvidia quote really sounded like a AI generated sound bite, does that fellow actually exist? Or is this an episode of Ghost in the Shell ? | 04:24:24

An in this interview with Sam Altman from a year ago, he explains why he took Open AI closed source. Basically he he under estimated the amount of compute power and money required for that and couldn’t get the government to fund it. He couldn’t raise the amount he needed as an open source project and wouldn’t have made the progress he has. That seems reasonable but he could be setting himself up as world leader of AI too, if he completely changes course, motivationally. He’s keeping several not for profit principles active in the for profit business Around minute36 https://podverse.fm/episode/4e1NkWZqr | 03:23:19

I have a little bit of feedback. I think a little less Apple hardware talk and a little more open source software news and maybe even some development tips would be nice. Hardware review is nice if it’s pertinent to if it’s a good development machine or not, or even if you guys believe something new is going to be a thing that should be considered developing for. There is a lot going on in the open source space that’s not Apple related, but it seems that Apple dominates the conversation. One example is that the US government has actually put out its preferred languages, and may start to reject any software written in C/C++. Acceptable languages for future use (including any open source libraries to be pulled in for projects) is topped by Rust, Go, and Python. | 16:43:50

In reply to @bhh32:matrix.orgHey Bryan, so we did mention the C++ thing. I personally think it's a little silly. With that said your point is taken re balanced coverage :) | 22:03:34

I like the apple coverage. Although I’m pretty much a normie, except my hobby was music production on apple hardware using LogicPro9 and X but became alarmed at the time of the San Bernardino FBI asking Apple to break into the phone, apple slowing down older phones, and Apple being over 1 trillion dollars, all pointed to the company being a choke point. Keeping in mind macOS starts with BSD, a relic probably similar to the closed source Unix, but open source. Though macOS is closed. I’m refurbishing 24 y/o Apple hardware with m.2 drives, i7 CPUs, maxed out ram, double what Apple understood the unit could handle and working out PCIe2? Connection to perhaps either a Powercolor Red Devil 👿 Redeon RX 5700 XT or Sapphire NITRO RX PCIe 3x16 special edition. I haven’t figured out if I have to desolder resolder anything like was done on a later model MacBook Pro on YouTube. I have an iMac that I’m going to dual boot with either Catalina or the latest macOS and nixOS if I can, or a more tame Linux distribution. One of Michael Bazzell last points before disappearing was to say iOS phones can be converted to highly secure devices similar to pixel/graphene security and similar to any android device by removing (disabling apps and turning off their icons). Apple is an elephant in the room and many artist types use their stuff as appliances. I spent years learning to navigate LogicPro so I want to access it at times while transitioning to explore Reaper, Ardour, Harrison Mixbus, Davinci, LightWorks, I forget the other Ubuntu Studio DAW and maybe Bitwig (400 USD) I like to know what’s going with Apple, like the VisionPro and being sued or whatever from the community here rather than click bait number rackets. I may end up contributing or collaborating on VisionPro content. I think world wide, iPhone accounts for about 20% but in the US it’s about 60%. Stuff good to know for content creators. Coder seems a bit positioned more for normies than coders. I feel bad about that for them, but it’s good for me. Maybe there should be a separate podcast for Apple normies? | 15:43:46
Adding my voice to the appreciation of the Apple coverage. I feel like Chris and Mike generally do a good job of spreading out the news stories. It just happens that Apple has a lot of things happening this cycle. Vision Pro, anti-trust lawsuits, M chip vulnerabilities, us gov getting upset about bubble colors, Apple’s big conference happening soon, etc | 20:02:47
In reply to @mooshuxs:matrix.orgWell, an older iPhone without a reduction of the cpu would drain faster. Though not being upfront about it and giving the owners a choice is a bad image. I generally reduce the cpu of my nearly 3 year old samsung daily while working | 23:27:30
In reply to @filanto:matrix.orgI mean, it might have been the right move to slow it down. The towers were I was had limited bandwidth, not sure if that’s the right term, newer phones seemed to have priority, I had a feeling older ones were given lower priority and had more dropped calls. I think it would have been a good move to explain this. I probably would have understood or agreed. I felt like the reason they said nothing was an attempt to sell more phones. | 23:41:10
I felt at their mercy, so I started looking at open source stuff. | 23:41:51
It was only after they were caught that they offered an explanation, so I already had lost trust, not entirely sure if their explanation was the exact reason, but it could have been. Could they have turned down the radios too? Maybe that helped the battery too? I don’t know enough to know. I got a one plus1 and put, was it called Ubuntu Touch? I can’t remember. It wasn’t functional at the time, but I loved watching it boot up, so cool 😎 | 23:49:02

The Samsung OS sounds awesome. I’ve had misgivings because I assumed it was on top of android. So I thought it wasn’t as efficient, but the design seems really great 👍 | 00:15:27
chrislas: hey skipper. I won’t use the jar jar promo code thanks. Reason being that I want to support you so I am not motivated to reduce the price. | 07:34:11
In reply to @mooshuxs:matrix.orgI have to turn the cpu down because it wouldn't last long and I am constantly charging it if I want to use the phone during the day. Sometimes I go full low power mode and it's basically a feature phone. Batteries degrade and a dead phone is less useful than a slower one | 09:43:51
I've been up an hour and I've lost 12% battery already | 09:44:34
In reply to @filanto:matrix.orgAre you a DIYer? Is the phone battery “un replaceable”? Did it drop that quickly when it was new? If you really like everything else have you considered replacing the battery? If so, a warning that may not apply. I replaced the battery in my iPhone 7 with a stock new one from eBay and got the same quick discharge time as the one I replaced. I believe the battery was made at the time my phone was and though it was “new”, it wasn’t new in the sense that it had longer use between chargings. Also, I wonder if because it’s Samsung, it’s powering 2 OSs and using more battery power for that reason? When I purchased my stock replacement, there were better than stock batteries offered that I regret not taking more seriously. I got another iPhone as a gift, but it’s an SE gen 3, it’s an iPhone but is under performing compared with other models. I’m considering getting my iPhone 7 up and running but am concerned about its performance only because it’s so old. Maybe it doesn’t have enough RAM for use nowadays or maybe Apple will slow it “to save battery life” even with a new high capacity battery? I should just do a search, for that and about the RAM | 15:36:46 |
