kpovoc | I’m curious about Chris’ thoughts on Nix’s long term viability, given the issues the project appears to be having at the core developer level.
I’m a bit late to the game, and don’t really want to invest the time learning a totally new way to manage my system when the new way may not even be around in 2 - 5 years. | 07:22:13 |

Soham Gumaste | I have doubts with Lix/aux etc being able to foot the bill for the binary cache | 10:44:24 |
Soham Gumaste | I just took the opportunity to mess around a bit with Guix which is basically as long term viable as the GNU project | 10:44:55 |

Every distro in history goes throw community drama growing pains. Nix's community size has exploded in the last couple years.

chrislas | But it really just depends on what you need from your computer. | 20:30:41 |
chrislas | IDK maybe they are, but don't think they are address the chief concerns of serious deployments. They are addressing social conners, which appeals more to individual end users, and their non-production systems.
Which is totally fine. But prolly not appropriate in the context of investing "the time learning a totally new way to manage my system when the new way may not even be around in 2 - 5 years."
I ignorant to think Nix won't be around in 2-5 years because a few of the community's most intense personalties got upset and forked.
I am sorry for being so blunt about it, but I think some perspective is needed here. | 20:34:59 |

I am sorry for being so blunt about it, but I think some perspective is needed here. Hey, I appreciate the perspective. It’s why I asked for the opinion. From what I could tell, seems a group wants to kick out their “benevolent dictator”, which can sometimes hurt quickly growing distros. Ikey and Solus come to mind. | 20:44:43 |

@mooshuxs:matrix.org | Great point, one obvious thing about that situation is Solus is a really great distribution so so many people were watching it and when he left and the way he left was also in our face, so to speak but like many FOsS projects require a lot of time and can really burn people out resulting in this type of situation. It’s truly a great distro and I assume a lot of that has to do with Ikey’s thoughtfulness and generosity.
I don’t know him, but I wanted to acknowledge one reason so many people are familiar with that situation and it’s a great idea to plan for some thing similar to have an easier outcome than they did | 22:11:04 |
