@vancha112:matrix.org | I did, programming is kind of my thing :P But thus far the entire openhab hierarchy of things, channels etc. has been very confusing. | 13:30:22 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | I don't where I should begin implementing. | 13:30:28 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | anyway, thanks again. My questions are answered. | 13:32:32 |
SnowCat | Thats because everything is named differently.. once you figured it out it is very clear actually since it is very true to its object oriented roots | 13:33:10 |
SnowCat | Like I said read the wiki, there is a tutorial section which gives quick rundown on the components and then each compenent has a more detailed section | 13:34:29 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | my usecase is a bit too simple to have to learn a system like this :) I'll look for something else. | 13:37:57 |
viego | what is your use cse? | 13:38:33 |
viego | * what is your use case? | 13:38:36 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | I want to have an overview of a couple of things: garden soil moisture level (through moisture sensors), water the garden automatically with servo controled water hoses, in addition i want to have seperate buttons to turn lights in my house on and off. | 13:41:07 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | for that I want a single panel overview (which shows graphs of garden soil moisture levels over time) etc. | 13:41:50 |
viego | if you are a programmer you can go with some mqtt stuff, but as soon as it comes to more devices from different vendors you will end with something like openhab | 13:43:17 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | yeah that was actually the first thing I ran into. I have no idea how mqtt works as a protocol (and it looks like i have to implement it myself for my non-standard devices), I don't know java (or how to do anything in openhab yet), so It's currently a tradeoff between using an existing system (openhab), or programming it myself. | 13:45:03 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | Currently writing it myself is probably the fastest way. | 13:45:11 |
SnowCat | It does not get much simpler than this.. openhab + node-red let's you set up everything so quickly.. and if you are a programmer it should be really easy for you to get started.. any other solution I can think of requires less reading but much more tinkering and frustration. | 13:45:15 |
SnowCat | You don't need java if you use node-red.. it has an mqtt binding.. | 13:45:41 |
viego | In reply to @vancha112:matrix.org Currently writing it myself is probably the fastest way. what's your language, maybe iobroker, home assistant oder fhem are better for you | 13:45:57 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | python would do, or C, c++, Rust, javascript or php | 13:46:23 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | but I'm just making a tradeoff | 13:46:37 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | I already know how to control everything seperately. I like the way openhab helps you to organize everything into a whole. | 13:47:10 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | but i don't see myself setting everything up in a day or so. It's all a bit overwhelming :) | 13:47:31 |
viego | yes it is, but over time you get familiar with everything and new stuff is added in minutes | 13:48:14 |
viego | but the learning curve is imho high | 13:48:38 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | yeah I was hoping it would save me time. In my current position the opposite holds. I need to know a lot more before i get to a working solution. That's not a problem in itself, but it just means, that for my specific situation, I'm better off not using it. | 13:49:54 |
SnowCat | Are you ignoring me? Node-Red is javascript scripting.. Maybe look into it before you dismiss it.. you can install it with the openhabian installer and it completely replaces the openhab rule engine.. | 13:51:38 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | no, i'm not ignoring | 13:52:23 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | actually i was going through the wiki -.- | 13:52:26 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | But I'm assuming the same topics apply | 13:53:14 |
viego | :) | 13:53:12 |
SnowCat | Ah . Well if you use node-red.. which i would advise because it makes everything beatifully easy. you only need items and sitemaps.. and to install node-red and while you're at it grafana for pretty graphs | 13:53:29 |
@vancha112:matrix.org | I think that would be the best way for me to go then. | 13:53:53 |
