brt | hello, i use matrix-synapse 1.1.0+stretch1 from matrix.org with postgres and want to upgrade to buster - now i have read https://lists.debian.org/debian-glibc/2019/03/msg00030.html - it seems i have to be careful with the upgrade because it could mess up the database - what is the recommended practice, (1) uninstall matrix, (2) upgrade to buster, (3) reindex database, (4) reinstall matrix ? | 13:10:54 |

Slobodan | In reply to @brt:g24.at hello, i use matrix-synapse 1.1.0+stretch1 from matrix.org with postgres and want to upgrade to buster - now i have read https://lists.debian.org/debian-glibc/2019/03/msg00030.html - it seems i have to be careful with the upgrade because it could mess up the database - what is the recommended practice, (1) uninstall matrix, (2) upgrade to buster, (3) reindex database, (4) reinstall matrix ? My workflow: 1. Backup, 2. Upgrade to buster, 3. Reboot, 4. Upgrade Postgresql cluster 9.6 main to 11 main (pg_upgradecluster 9.6 main), 5. Drop cluster 9.6 main, 6. Uninstall postgresql 9.6 server and client (apt-get -s remove postgresql-9.6 postgresql-client-9.6 postgresql-contrib-9.6) , With this workflow database will be reindexed. | 22:35:23 |
brt | nice, thank you, sounds good! | 22:37:54 |
Slobodan | And there is no need to reinstall synapse (in your case). | 22:39:42 |
brt | should i deactivate the service until the rebuild is done? | 22:40:36 |
Slobodan | Not sure. But I didn't. And everything was OK. | 22:41:34 |
brt | ok, with a db-dump i will be safe anyway | 22:43:31 |
Slobodan | A tip: with autopostgresqlbackup you can have automatic daily, weekly and monthly DB backups | 22:50:46 |
brt | yeah, thats what i use | 22:53:00 |

brt | matrixadmin: voila, here we are running buster, thanks alot for your hints, worked like a charm except cluster 11 was already present after the os-upgrade, so i had to drop it first, before i was able to run pg_upgradecluster - the installer-notes were great help too | 01:21:16 |
Slobodan | brt: 👍️ | 04:25:34 |
