Ansgar | As a person with crazy ideas: why don't we have a debian.org-Matrix homeserver? With native Debian rooms :) | 10:31:46 |
highvoltage | I don't actually think that's such a crazy idea | 10:35:01 |
highvoltage | although it would have to start out as a debian.net service until it has proved itself | 10:35:29 |
Ansgar | Hmm, I would like to avoid renaming it. That only creates problems.
We have non-DSA services under debian.org too: namely irc.debian.org.
For the very first experimental stage, running it under debian.net is fine, but even there we cannot use "#debian:debian.net" as that would require changes to the debian.net zone.
(I stole matrix.d.n and chat.d.n to be able to play a bit later ;)) | 10:40:48 |
Ansgar | I though a bit about what one could do to start simple: No user registrations to start with (to avoid clashes with the regular account namespace); might be possible later. Just host rooms at start. | 10:45:40 |
highvoltage | yeah | 10:46:00 |
highvoltage | I had another idea too but let me PM you | 10:46:20 |
utkarsh2102 | Just btw, do we have an exact amount of work left for packaging? | 10:48:50 |
utkarsh2102 | A task list, I mean^ | 10:48:59 |
andrewsh | actually, not really: it would be enough to put a single file under https://debian.net/.well-known/ | 11:10:32 |
andrewsh | Ansgar: β | 11:11:08 |
andrewsh | alternatively, under https://debian.org/.well-known π | 11:12:09 |
andrewsh | the server itself can still live at *.debian.net | 11:12:38 |
| madduck β¬ joined the room. | 11:19:44 |
Ansgar | andrewsh: yes, but debian.net would need a change one cannot do. Using :debian.net instead of :debian.org permanently would be fine too. DSA might like that more. | 11:32:54 |
andrewsh | Iβm not sure what change do you mean? | 11:33:21 |
andrewsh | a file at debian.org might direct everyone to, say, chat.debian.net | 11:34:03 |
Ansgar | andrewsh: The change of creating that file. | 11:47:27 |
andrewsh | right, you probably meant debian.org not debian.net | 11:47:51 |
Ansgar | Well, it needs the same change for either domain.
And debian.net would in addition need working https. | 11:51:25 |
| hartmans joined the room. | 12:01:54 |
madduck β¬ | the question of org vs. net long-term is one of whether the homeserver should be for DDs only, or everyone. | 12:18:34 |
madduck β¬ | and if the former, then even though matrix.debian.net will be the beginning, we should be using :debian.org from the start since it's not possible to move or redirect yet | 12:19:17 |
Ansgar | madduck β¬: I agree that we don't want to move, but having :debian.net might be okay too; I have no strong opinion on that (though users might be confused as usual...)
To start with, I would just disable user registration. That makes life easier. Should we enable user registration in the future, I would like to avoid clashes between the regular debian.org account namespace , i.e. only allow to use the same name as on has there.

uhoreg | In reply to @highvoltage:matrix.org any other debian channels on here that's interesting? There's also #debian:matrix.org, which is for general Debian discussion (whereas this room is mostly for discussing packaging of Matrix-related software) | 12:42:36 |
Ansgar | Hmm, isn't /usr/bin/generate_config a very generic name for a binary shipped in matrix-synapse? | 15:46:25 |
Willem | Sounds like something that should be in /usr/lib/matrix-synapse/ IMO | 15:55:33 |
andrewsh | good point | 16:31:07 |
andrewsh | please file a bug π | 16:31:19 |
andrewsh | if you want it fixed for buster, make sure itβs release-critical if possible π | 16:32:05 |
