richvdh | the sentinel context ones are probably fixed too | 08:49:41 |
andrewsh | yeah | 08:50:35 |
andrewsh | turns out homeserver.log.2 ≠ homeserver.log.2.gz | 08:50:56 |
andrewsh | the former is from July while the latter is from January | 08:51:02 |
richvdh | anyway right, I need to go and do something else. Please please please reconsider the default logging level, or at least do your best to help users increase the logging before they come to us for support. | 08:51:49 |
andrewsh | in this case, Failed to renew attestation of amount to the majority of my log files | 08:51:58 |
andrewsh | In reply to @richvdh:sw1v.orgI have reenabled INFO on my instance, will monitor it from a while to see how bad it is | 08:52:24 |
andrewsh | I need some data to decide, I hope you understand | 08:52:45 |
andrewsh | oh, my alter ego Riot is so much behind | 08:54:20 |
Linda | In reply to @richvdh:sw1v.org tbhon you sounded like a bully earlier, so demanding.
not constructive
this is constructive. re: burden of support, send the people with support issues to our way. (I'd probably refer to the upstream having issues with logging verbosity.) or (discouraging to do this) distribute your own packages the way you want to support them. | 09:13:18 |
Linda | not ideal for the projects to diverge | 09:13:27 |
Linda | and if the logging isn't improved, then document how to get the "debug" info out of INFO lines | 09:16:22 |
Linda | because INFO = debug at this point | 09:16:34 |
andrewsh | Linda, honestly I don’t see us providing better support than richvdh can | 09:16:57 |
Linda | andrewsh: Sorry, I didn't mean it to be interpreted like so. I like what Debian does with logs, hoping it stays that way (for now). | 09:17:34 |
Linda | And I'm hoping this issue would be fixed upstream so Debian could drop the patch | 09:17:52 |
chrysn | Linda: they had a serious conversation, but "bully" sounds a bit harsh. Looks like progress was made after all/ | 09:19:10 |

Linda | Don't get me wrong, rich is also nice to cooperate with stuff like renaming the matrix-synapse-py3 package from matrix.org back to Debian-ized matrix-synapse . It's nice. | 09:20:31 |
andrewsh | I can see why Richard was annoyed and I think I would also be very annoyed if I was in his place 😁 | 09:22:51 |
Linda | Agreed. | 09:23:37 |
chrysn | Good to see everyone getting along, thank you all for the time you're putting into this. | 09:23:45 |
Linda | I submitted a summary of the former discussion to the bug | 09:48:14 |
Linda | (when I get whitelisted, if there's any on the receiving end) | 09:48:26 |
wudo set a profile picture. | 10:08:20 | |
Linda | even if the logging verbosity is fixed upstream, what is Debian going to do with 0.99.2 in stable where it's likely not going to be changed? | 10:21:00 |
Mathijs | realisticly probably nothing, but if someone comes for support with synapse 0.99.2 they'll quickly be told to please upgrade, because 0.99 is too old to be running | 10:25:52 |
Jörg Sommer | What mostly makes me upset on Richard's reaction is, I propsed a Guideline for log message level, but he ditched it. As well as some other requests to rate down some warnings/errors to info or debug. As some commenter on the issue put it »I feel like every new homeowner complains about getting so many logs by default« | 16:55:24 |
grin | I would have said if I was here that a reverse patch could be included in the usr/share/doc/.../ with the comment that "if you want to debug a problem and don't mind multiple gigabytes of logs, huge amount of IO and CPU then run tis command to set the NV debug mode". | 19:59:25 |
grin | In reply to @richvdh:sw1v.orgSynapse is v1.0+ now, it is not general expectation to ship it with DEBUG logging enabled. There should be an easy way to enable it, but definitely not shipping it like that. Also I believe various people complained about the logging (yours truly at least 5 times, last is this morning), and while it's not your personal job it shall be mentioned that no progress has been observed about this area of problems. | 20:03:39 |
