Szybet | well if the client doesn't use it and uses a native rendered, than maybe | 19:07:51 |
Szybet | but i dont see any reason for it anyway, vnc is cross platform and xorg is going away anyway | 19:08:09 |
Ross Rochford | Does the kobo browser handle JavaScript single page apps or web sockets? | 19:09:27 |
Szybet | its old webkit, so probably no | 19:10:00 |
Szybet | we could launch firefox or falcon with musl chroot via xorg, but it would make it too heavy at this point | 19:10:56 |
Ross Rochford | shame, it would have been interesting to experiment with OCRing the screen to render an approximation in the browser | 19:11:05 |
Szybet | You could do that eassly without it, just show the text in a Qt app which exposes it's input via network | 19:22:02 |
Szybet | actually that's a really good app idea | 19:22:13 |

narodism | In reply to @alex-a-soto:matrix.orgwould that be color eink? have you tried doing an investment round? | 16:34:30 |
narodism | I'm surprised framework is not willing to do more legwork to help bring this project forward. You'd think they'd want more independent peripheral manufacturers in their ecosystem, and the eink monitor crowd (linux sysadmins/coders who spend all day staring at text) seems exactly a market segment they'd want to monopolize. Seems very shortsighted of them not to jump on this | 16:37:36 |

rrix (now @rrix:aelf.land) changed their display name from rrix 🍕 🌎 to rrix (now @rrix:aelf.land). | 22:20:00 | |

alex-soto | In reply to @narodism:matrix.org That estimate is not based on a color e-ink screen; the options that are currently available leave much to be desired, although in the future, we'd like to get a sample of E Ink Spectra 6 for comparison. We haven't tried doing an investment round yet. We have been in conversation for a while with an angel investor who aligns with our values, understands the value proposition, our long-term vision, and we're working on securing a financial commitment. In regards to Framework, I imagine they have other priorities that rank higher at the moment, but I do agree that it would be great if they supported independent peripheral manufacturers in their ecosystem. From our survey, we've received comments from people interested in a Framework Laptop with an e-ink display. | 15:11:47 |

narodism | what about the displays used in the new DaSung and BigMe monitors? | 15:43:01 |
alex-soto | In reply to @narodism:matrix.orgWhich one specifically are you referring to? We have a list of screens that we have tested and confirmed to work with; we would have to test for other screens. https://github.com/Modos-Labs/Caster?tab=readme-ov-file#screen-modules | 15:50:13 |

alethkit | What are your plans for implementing driver support for your EPD controller in Linux? I'm looking to mainline the Pinenote's WIP driver, but wanted to look at prior work, but the existing out of tree drivers are all FBDev based, and the remarkable appears to perform the EPDC's functions in software. | 12:40:46 |
alex-soto | alethkit Hi alethkit, We've mainly focused on developing the display controller, Caster. We have yet to focus on driver support. We intend to work with Sourcehut on the development of Wayland protocols and driver support soon. Crowd Supply recently accepted us, and we are working on our campaign page. We plan to make Caster and our Paper Monitor available to others later this year. | 13:20:49 |
alex-soto | If anyone is in the Boston area this Friday, we'll be at Latch-up this year, https://fossi-foundation.org/latch-up/2024#caster-an-open-source-e-ink-controller | 14:13:08 |

Alistair | In reply to @alethkit:matrix.orgHey! I am the person who upstreamed the rM2 drivers (not the EPD controller though) as it is pretty much all in userspace | 01:36:26 |
Alistair | It is FBDev based as well, which is a pain | 01:37:50 |
Alistair | There is a Matrix chat on mainling eInk drivers, but it hasn't had much activity recently. I can link you if you are interested | 01:38:52 |
Szybet | In reply to @al:alistair23.meIs there andi in the chat already? He is porting kobos to mainline | 05:23:06 |
alethkit | In reply to @al:alistair23.meThat would be wonderful! Thank you very much! | 11:02:54 |
Alistair | Yeah, it's Andi's room. I can't actually invite you, but I asked to have you invited | 11:53:06 |
Szybet | Nah, I'm not that high level programmer to even talk about it | 12:38:05 |
Szybet | I was just curious if "our people" are there ;p | 12:38:29 |
