 jaywink | dansup: basically the reason is that the-federation.info used to (until 2 days ago) default to checking mastodon api first, for performance reasons, since that is what most of the servers are currently. This however caused some servers to be registered as Mastodon as the Mastodon API is meant for .... mastodon. I had no idea some other people have implemented it to jump on their mobiel clients :P
Now that Mastodon has shipped Nodeinfo in 3.0, I've moved the mastodon API check later on in the stage. Unfortunately mastodon lacks a lot of information in their nodeinfo implementation, so this will cause some issues for newly registered mastodon servers on the first lookup, but they should be fixed later. But any mastodon API compatible platforms should now correctly register.
