I would love to see Lucas J Mather (The Republican Professor [TRP]) on the show. Below is an example of a recent class at Azusa Pacific College, I believe.

I will now describe a recent classroom experience in my American Founding class this past week to give you a sense of the type of work I'm doing there.

I have this black student who is very sweet and likable who is probably failing the class but doesn't seem to know it. She just doesn't show up to turn in work. But when she does show up, she acts like it's just another normal day in class.

She was supposed to present her second paper on Lincoln and the Founding as it has to do with Slavery. She didn't show up Tuesday when it was due.

I happened to send an email out to the class requesting electronic copies so that I could post on the Canvas class management system online, and I think that email prompted her to come to class. So she came Thursday, and she presented on Lincoln and Slavery, a very superficial interaction with the material relatively speaking. But for her, she was really emotionally struggling with it.

Now I have been asking the students who present to pose a question to the class about their presentation.

It inevitably is some kind of "agreement" question, which is so interesting for me to watch. They ask each other if they agree with this or that.

I give them a little bit of a hard time with those because I think they need prior questions, first. They need questions having to do with mastery of the material, first, before they decide whether they agree. If you don't know the material, how can you know if you agree with it ? They want the agreement stuff first, before mastery. It's so backwards and odd.

So she asks the class, why it took so long for a president to try to solve the problem of slavery.

And what was interesting was so many students participated in the discussion. I did not intervene at all. Like in the Podcast, I mostly just listened.

They were all chatting up . But they were mostly regurgitating pre-thought, not post-thought. They were saying formulaic things like "systemic" this and that, and frankly, I couldn't understand what they were saying at all. But they were all talking, like in some kind of foreign language.

When it quieted down and everyone said their thing, I asked where in the Constitution was the president given the power to solve moral problems.

Folks, the entire class, the entire class, for once in this godforsaken semester, stopped looking at their damn computers.

The presenter looked at me as if I had just asked her what her grandma's name was , but she couldn't remember. She was trying. She named a provision that was actually not bad as an attempt, I was proud of that. She said the president was the face of the United States to the entire world. Not bad. That's true, that's in the Constitution (kind of). The president receives ambassadors, is what I think she meant. Yes, that's in Article II.

I said, can you give an example of what you mean.

She went right to Trump. Not kidding. Right to Trump. And so I listened carefully and patiently and nodded my head in agreement that yes, Trump does have a certain flavor that might present to other nations. Sure.

But I reminded her that her topic was Lincoln and slavery. And so her point was presidents prior to Lincoln, who were mostly Democrats. And this was before , recall, TV or social media or even photographs. You do realize this. Most people didn't really even know what the "face" of America was in the president, because they didn't even know what he looked like.

Again, the entire class. They were taking it in, deeply.

And I said, what about the other provisions of the Constitution? The president is the chief law enforcement officer of the country. It's his job to enforce federal law .

They were very bothered by that. Doesn't someone else do that? Trump was supposed to do that ? Wait, what?

I said it's right there in the text of the Constitution.

So then they re-went back to federal law, and who says what that is, again ?

And so we went through the system , again. These are seniors, recall. Political science majors.

I reminded them that Abraham Lincoln is the only president in American history, a Republican, who enforced the death penalty on a slave trader. It had been federal law since 1808 that importation of slaves from Africa or the Caribean would be treated as a capital criminal offense the same as piracy on the open seas in the law of admiralty. The punishment was hanging by the neck until dead. Lincoln is the only president who allowed the hanging, and he used Biblical reasoning in his decision. Exodus 21:16 provides the death penalty for the crime of "manstealing" or kidnapping, and then selling the person kidnapped (which was the entire African slave trade). He had the power to commute the sentence or pardon him. That's in the Constitution. But Lincoln didn't do that. And he really struggled with it.

The looks on their faces.

Can you tell me what the name of the slave trader was , I asked.

No one could.

I said it's on page 49.

And so I gently said, what makes you think racism is the kind of thing that can be solved in an election ?

That was the kicker, apparently. They all melted. Every single soul in the class. Melted like butter in a frying pan.

God is doing a mighty work here in this tiny, tiny class. A mighty, slow, low-paying work here. It's what I do. I'm there to respond to them responding to the material. They would not have this, otherwise, unless other professors do the same thing. You have to spend time with them, and you have to repeat things over and over until they get it, in dialogue. Otherwise it doesn't sink in. And you have to challenge them to see themselves in a new light, as people who are capable and have promise if they would just grow an attention span and become more self aware. You can't become others-aware if you aren't self-aware, first.

Anyway, that's a snapshot into some of the work I do.

@amyc:matrix.orgamyc kings_daughter: I’m not sure. I’ll have to ask. He is a great teacher fighting on many fronts. He and his wife, Heather, need prayer and support. They are being discriminated against BIG TIME! I am concerned for their health and safety. πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ» 18:07:50

I just ran across this guy on a YT show with Pastor James Kaddis.
Ryan Tillman is a believer, a police officer, and a man with a vision to heal the relationship between the public and police.
Here is his website and link to an introductory video on his YT channel. I think you'll find this encouraging and something you may want to learn about.
The third link is to the video I just watched where Ryan is interviewed by Pastor James.
Ryan would be a great interview for a Psalm Sunday show, gooddog !!
