kvark | I guess this might be a good opportunity to drop the bad habit of wasting time there 😅 | 19:45:06 |
m4b | sometimes i find myself reading like hacker news comments for an hour and i'm like what am i doing with my life, i could be reading a book or anything at all, instead of reading this nonsense | 19:45:43 |
kvark | you've got to have a sense of community somewhere! Matrix isn't bad, but it's not a forum. Discord is closed (and not a forum either). I believe the niche is strong here. | 19:45:59 |
m4b | or if it's not even nonsense in general who cares | 19:46:01 |
jasperrlz | I read HN out of boredom but I'm not impressed with what I see there a lot | 19:46:45 |
jasperrlz | Discord is probably the closest to forming a sense of community | 19:47:02 |
m4b | almost all my online passive reading habits are out of boredom, unfortunately :( | 19:47:12 |
m4b | ugh cargo sparse crates update is like the best ergonomic improvement in years; i absolutely love it | 19:59:08 |
m4b | like it's just these little details, that always get me coming back to rust + ecosystem | 19:59:45 |
kvark | how does it affect you, out of curiosity? | 20:01:13 |
cwfitzgerald | In reply to @kvark:matrix.org I guess this might be a good opportunity to drop the bad habit of wasting time there 😅 Yeah, i nuked the reddit app I was using and not planning to replace it with anything | 22:03:36 |

m4b | In reply to @kvark:matrix.org how does it affect you, out of curiosity? prior to sparse i would routinely wait 1-2 minutes for crates.io index to update; i had (multiple) coworkers complain about this as well, asking what on earth it's doing, etc. in addition, things like building on a raspberry pi were deeply impacted by this, taking generally much longer. it was in general just a minor annoyance/dev workflow slowdown magnified all over the place, and the fix is more than welcome. | 18:26:21 |
m4b | basically that 1-2 minutes is now 0 seconds, and it's awesome | 18:28:22 |
cwfitzgerald | I've had issues with it to, though the delay seems sparatic | 18:43:20 |
@heavyrain266:mozilla.org | In reply to @kvark:matrix.org Reddit exodus is a hot topic these days. What do people recommend? I'm considering Lemmy, but it feels clunky and unpopulated rn I recommend you to not look at lemmy, authors were indentifed as tankies and they also host lemmygrad... on the same IP as official instance https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379 | 19:13:16 |
@heavyrain266:mozilla.org | Matrix can become a forum if you write a zulip-like UI | 19:14:46 |
@heavyrain266:mozilla.org | I've seen some attempts to implement twitter clone too | 19:15:07 |
cwfitzgerald | At this point I think there just aren't any serious competitors to reddit worth considering - Twitter exodus happened slowly and still largely happening - the reddit exodus being in response to a hard policy change means there hasn't been enough time for a leading competetor to show up | 19:26:04 |
kvark | Bran: what does "tankies" mean? | 23:03:05 |
cwfitzgerald | In reply to @kvark:matrix.org Bran: what does "tankies" mean? "tankie" in modern usage is used pejoratively to refer to people who are supportive of authoritarian communist regimes, notably the USSR and CCP | 23:06:51 |
cwfitzgerald | For the history and some great context, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie | 23:09:19 |
cwfitzgerald | * For the history and some greater context, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie | 23:09:25 |
kvark | I see, thanks for clarifying! So the idea is to ignore Lemmy because some of the authors support Russia's actions? | 23:13:58 |
cwfitzgerald | Nowadays is almost certainly talking about the CCP, though there are still some references it referring to Russia | 23:15:05 |
kvark | https://programming.dev/signup just hangs on me. Does it work for anybody to sign up? | 23:17:15 |

m4b | oof log bumping msrv just broke me https://github.com/m4b/goblin/actions/runs/5239169241/jobs/9458758432 | 03:26:17 |
m4b | what's strange is i'd expect cargo build or cargo test to say that my msrv is 1.56, but log's is 1.60, so you have an error; but it builds fine as long as your compiler is greater than 1.60 | 03:26:59 |
m4b | i guess actually what i said makes no sense | 03:27:41 |
m4b | otherwise nothing would build if you set it | 03:27:49 |
m4b | haha | 03:27:58 |
