mgoerens | Hi everyone, I have a public room on matrix.org , and would like to share a specific message with the world. The link contains an anchor, , however the page opens up to the beginning of the room rather and doesn't jump to the desired message. Is that the expected behavior ? If yes, is there a way to share only one message ? Or have the page jump to the desired message ? If not, what am I missing to make this work ? | 11:32:44 |
mgoerens | Many thanks in advance ! | 11:33:09 |
MMJD-MxO | You want a permalink. However that's very basic Matrix knowledge and orthogonal/unrelated to the topic of this room. | 11:37:14 |
MMJD-MxO | Check your invites @mgoerens:matrix.org , otherwise try a Riot client room within +matrix:matrix.org or the "HQ" room. | 11:39:35 |
mgoerens | Thanks for the hint, will check there. I just meant to say that at first look the issue "seemed" to come from https://view.matrix.org and I though this is the place to ask for help regarding this topic. Excuse the noise, I will check in the other room as you suggested | 11:41:02 |
MMJD-MxO | But for HTML sharing, that SHOULD be possible. I'd still fetch a permalink, in case it needs manual splicing.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ | 11:42:02 |
MMJD-MxO | 🤷♂️ | 11:42:14 |
MMJD-MxO | Yes, this room is for view.matrix.org . Your message seemed unclear, if you indeed meant you want to share via HTML and not just for those using a Matrix client. '
But even if it works correctly, thusly, AFAIK, people would see the entire page of messages, but with your intended message highlighted in yellow, per the typical CSS, IIRC. | 11:45:28 |
mgoerens | Yes, that's not a problem for me that they see the entire room, but scrolling down until finding the message highlighted in yellow is not very convenient. | 11:47:49 |
mgoerens | This is the link I try to share: https://view.matrix.org/room/!dbguyjsdOZgKMwzTgX:matrix.org/?anchor=$4gzmsb1lSUtwv7yK-MVrztXz2NcWQp4dReRM5qAwcMQ&highlight | 11:48:00 |
mgoerens | Let's continue to discuss in the other room ? | 11:49:05 |
MMJD-MxO | IDK, actual Matrix Static is the topic here, and the Help room is general Matrix help, whereas HOPEFULLY others with more knowledge on Matrix Static would answer herein.
But AFAIK the highlighting is what you get. And typically:
"PRs/MRs welcome."
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ | 11:52:51 |
MMJD-MxO | 🤷♂️ | 11:53:04 |
mgoerens | Ok ! ^^ would be happy to contribute. Then back to my initial question: Is that the expected behavior ? (.i.e not jumping to the pointed message) Is there a way to activate this feature ? No is also a valid answer of course. That means it's the way it is and if I wish for it... I'll have to do it, I know the rules :D | 11:55:35 |
MMJD-MxO | IDK, I wish I could be more helpful, or that the people who actually could be more helpful would be more responsive.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ | 12:19:38 |
MMJD-MxO | 🤷♂ | 12:19:41 |
Michael (t3chguy) | it is definitely intentional that it doesn't just show the one permalinked message | 12:21:34 |
Michael (t3chguy) | but also the context around it, there is an open issue for having the permalinked (highlighted) message be in the middle | 12:21:47 |
Michael (t3chguy) | I could add a limit query arg so you could say &limit=1 to limit it to just that message, but in 99% of cases, context is important, what if you permalink to someone saying "Yes", without context it is meaningless | 12:23:24 |
mgoerens | Thanks, I hadn't find the open issue, now I got it : https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-static/issues/60
I agree context is important and that it should be displayed. If you have a few pointers how to solve this maybe I can have a look into it later on. | 12:29:26 |
MMJD-MxO | The idea to put the anchored & highlighted content in the middle of the page seems very helpful for context, and for possible relevant replies. I would say also make the anchored post much larger and put horizontal bars/lines, or a box around that post, i.e. using CSS or whatnot.
The limit-query variable &limit=n seems interesting, however, and useful in cases where context may not matter and only the selected post is pertinent. But obviously links to bypass that would be needed, and I'd say only generate that from some HTML element actually on a Matrix Static result page as a link to share, since most people would probably want the broader context. | 13:35:32 |
