@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulHello everyone,14:59:29
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulMy name is Matthieu Bailleul, I am CNRS reseacher at IPCMS, working in the field of nanomagnetism / spintronics. I am also member of the QMat exectutive committee, in charge of student selection, and I am teaching a small course on magnetism at Telecom Physique. I will be online in the next hour. I can answer your question. 15:01:48

@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulIf you have no question for the moment, a small guess : who is that ? 15:05:56
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulPierre Weiss : He established the modern understanding of ferromagnetism in the early 1900's (which is also an elementary version of the mean field theory), and also funded the "Institut de physique" of the Université de Strasbourg in 1918.15:14:01
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulAlready heard about him ?15:15:13
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulMagnetism plays an important role in the devleopment of qauntum/statistical physics. Do you have examples in mind ?15:18:40
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulWe can start with the theory of paramagnetism (Curie-Langevin-Brillouin)...15:24:54
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleul...proceed with the Holstein-Primakoff transform, developped for modelling spin-waves, and at the heart of second quantization procedure. Other suggestions ?15:30:33
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulI will stay online about 10 minutes, do not hesitate if you have questions/ remarks, or contact me later by email : matthieu.bailleul@ipcms.unistra.fr15:41:21
@mauriciogv:matrix.orgMauricio Gómez VHi Matthieu I have only one question that came to me recently. Can spin waves be defined in systems are not lattice-like? Can I have a spin wave in a gas for example?15:42:03
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleul Hi Mauricio, Yes, spin waves can exist in any magnetized systems. They correspond to precession-like excitation of the magnetization field \vec{M}(r,t) and they can exist as soon as this field can be defined. However, they will be (much) more intense in ferromagnetic systems. 15:45:06
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulThere is some litterature about spin waves in nuclear spin systems, including Helium III15:46:40
@mauriciogv:matrix.orgMauricio Gómez VOh thanks that makes sense, I will check the literature on helium :-)15:51:24
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulYou are welcome, any other things you would like to discuss folks ?15:53:41
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulThen, see you another time... maybe with a beer in hand ...15:56:03
@matthieu_bailleul:matrix.orgmatthieu_bailleulAll the best15:56:18
@mauriciogv:matrix.orgMauricio Gómez V Thanks Mathieu! 15:59:33

Invitation to the YIG@QMat gather, message from Denis Janković

Hello everyone,

I see from the doodle that the best venue for the meeting would be this Friday 28/05 from 7 to 8 pm.

I will be sending you a link to join on Friday morning/noon.

Again there is not any set agenda or anything, it's just to keep in touch, meet new people and see what everyone is up to, talk about your plans for next year with other people, etc...

Don't worry, it will not be another zoom meeting, you will be able to discuss one on one, or with multiple people, even maybe play some games if we do everything correctly, all of that really easily and without downloads.

I hope to see most of you this Friday !

Cheers

PS: Sorry for the short notice, I was a bit busy since last Friday when the polling closed.

Invitation to the YIG@QMat gather, message from Denis Janković

Hello everyone !

As a reminder, the YIG gathering will take place this evening at 7pm.

It will take place on this link : https://gather.town/i/56zlZGBb

It is for now locked with a password, but it will be free for you to enter it in due time (around 6-6:30 pm)

Gather town is a great tool , that you can join either by downloading a client, or join directly from your browser and if you want to get accustomed to it (5 minutes) you can try it out here : https://gather.town/demo?type=original

See you this evening everyone !

PS: Sorry for the short notice, I was a bit busy since last Friday when the polling closed.
